2014 Forest Hill Vineyard Springvale Estate Riesling Great Southern Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This bonny single vineyard riesling from Forest Hill is the wine you can drink whilst their wonderful Block 1 riesling is in the cellar. Aromas of lemons, limes, Granny Smith apples and jasmine florals rise delicately from the glass, whilst the palate is light, bone-dry and zesty, with flinty minerality, tight acidity, and a touch of white pepper spice in the bright, refreshing finish. Just the thing for some creamy, freshly-shucked oysters.

Winemaker's Notes

Brilliant water like colour with watery hue. The nose displays delicate aromas of citrus, lime, green apple and steely mineral. The palate is quite tight and is built around a steely acid spine with flavours of lemon juice, green apple and steely mineral present. Clean crisp crunchy acid finish. Medium to long lemon juice, green apple and mineral aftertaste.

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
A fine, slowly maturing cellar style likely to develop charming complexity. Lightly spicy, its fragrance of tangy lime juice, guava and a hint of apple precede a long, generously flavoured and austere palate whose bright lemon/apple flavours and fine chalkiness are wrapped in a delightfully integrated but assertive acidity.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Pure-fruited and fine aromas of lime, nectarine, spice and a little orange zest for added lift; the palate is racy and fine, giving generosity and flesh at the same time for a thoroughly complete and satisfying, long and harmonious young wine.

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
An austere, chalky and tightly focused riesling whose floral, lightly spicy and musky bouquet of lime juice, pear and apple reveals a hint of lemon zest. It's long and shapely, with restrained presence of fruit tightly focused by austere, steely acids, finishing dry and citrusy with fine underlying chalkiness. Give it some time.

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
Showing some richness and riper fruits here in 2010, this has tropical fruits and a bright fragrant lift. The palate's more steely and finely bedded in with brisk acid crunch; some white-peach and citrus flavours run the distance. Finished long and true.

Quartz-white; a fragrant citrus and apple blossom bouquet; the palate is precisely focused, linear and long, with delicious citrus and green apple flavours tracking the bouquet.

Elegant, stylish and charmingly restrained, with a musky fragrance of white flowers, lavender, lime juice and lemon rind backed by a whiff of baby powder. It's long and juicy, pure and focused, with a tight, racy presence of tangy, fresh, citrusy fruit backed by a fine chalkiness before finishing with a bright acidity.

Beautifully fragrant and perfumed riesling from the Great Southern showing that slightly spicy character of the region. There's; some nettle and light limey influence on the nose with a tightly minerally spicy palate. Fine lingering acid sustains the finish. Nice wine.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
More accessible than Block 1, especially on the back-palate and finish, where lime juice and lime blossom notes break free; a very pure and intense riesling, also born to stay, thanks to its great acidity.

Has as much fruit depth as Block 1, but not the same precision and polish; citrus with a touch of passionfruit, and a good wine by any standards.

Wonderfully fragrant apple and citrus blossom aromas and flavours; a tight spine of acidity will hold the wine for many years. Gold medal National Wine Show '06.

Light straw-green; a very fine wine, partially living within the shadow of Block 1; by ordinary standards, high-quality lime and mineral flavours with great length.

Ray Jordan (2003 Vintage) says
Very distinctive aromas of apple and pear in here, with a hint of lime juice. Behind that is a faint mineral edge. The palate has a piercing acidity, which cuts and lifts the pure Riesling fruit. It's delicate and refined with a long lingering finish. Will cellar very nicely

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Complex wine, seemingly showing some botrytis influence, which, while adding to the total impact, has also hastened the development somewhat.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Light to medium yellow-green; intense herb, mineral and slate aromas foretell a powerful, intense, mouthfilling wine which, despite all the power, avoids phenolic toughness.
