Cracka Review

This racy Rizza from a single block in Mount Barker is a high-wire act that is yet to reach its full potential. Dry in style, it's a tightly-coiled number that shows heightened floral and citrus smells on the nose, along with hints of beeswax and flint. The palate is light, dry and minerally, with zippy lemon and ginger flavours, a talcy texture, frisky acidity, and a long, lingering honeysuckle finish. This will last at least 10 years!

Winemaker's Notes

Winemaking: Hand harvested in the morning and chilled further before whole-bunch pressed. The best fraction of the free-run juice was then transferred to a small stainless steel vessel where it was settled and racked off gross lees. Long fermentation occurs at cool temperatures before being racked of yeast lees, and filtered before bottling.

Vintage Notes: The growing season in Mount Barker saw favourable conditions throughout the year leading into vintage 2014. The consistent winter rainfall and solid rain events in October and November were very beneficial to recharging the soil profile. It was the driest summer since 1994 in the region however the dry grown Forest Hill blocks flourished. This dry ripening period with low disease pressure, cool nights and moderate warm days provided ideal conditions for Block 1 Riesling fruit.

Tasting Notes: Bright straw with green hues. There are lifted aromas of jasmine, lime blossom and sea spray. The palate displays citrus zest, fresh lime/grapefruit and slate. Natural acidity drives the long mineral palate and as always typical Block 1 chalky texture.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
The fragrant bouquet is filled with citrus and apple blossom scents leading unto the inexorably intense palate of lime/grapefruit flavours, sustained and lengthened by the full-on minerally grip to the finish.

Mike Bennie (2014 Vintage) says
Impressive vineyard at Forest Hill. Local winemakers almost speak about it with reverence. Rightly so when you consider who had tended it up to recently, and its age and position. Riesling has seemingly always done well here. Steely, stony scents, shows lift of honeysuckle and concentrated citrus. Dense citrus apple in the palate with lime, slate and chalky racing through. Impressive, penetrating, punchy Riesling of great velocity and drive.
2016 - 2030
James Suckling (2014 Vintage) says
The nose here is wonderful with plenty of flinty complexity, preserved lemons, dried citrus rind and just a hint of white pepper. The palate's full yet shows so much verve, cruising through layers of tropical and citrus fruit with fresh acidity and a long, very mineral finish. Drink now or hold and see this develop in bottle.
