    cracka review

Named after Ernest Allan River, the market gardening grandfather of current Gemtree viticulturist Melissa Brown, the Gemtree Ernest Allan Shiraz is a homage to the traditional way of growing grapes without chemicals. It's a wine that is literally earnest - honest and true.

Sourced from the biodynamically farmed, certified organic, Gemtree vineyard in McLaren Vale, this is a Shiraz that, to quote James Halliday (who awarded it 95 points), is a 'distillation of all things McLaren Vale Shiraz'.

Wild fermented and matured for 18 months in carefully selected French oak, what we love about this wine is the epic flavour richness, all achieved at just 13.8% alcohol. It seems Gary Walsh liked it just as much as we did, giving it 94 points and describing it as 'classic McLaren Vale Shiraz' that is 'ferrous, chocolaty, black fruited... full-bodied, but not overweight, with a mass of dense inky tannin, balanced acidity, and a very long clean finish'.

A dual gold medal winner at the massive Syrah Masters and at Mundus Vini, this intensely flavoured, deep, yet still perfectly balanced Shiraz is what McLaren Vale dreams are made of.

    James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Wild-fermented, matured in French barriques for 18 months. Inky purple-crimson, it is a distillation of all things McLaren Vale Shiraz, jet black fruits, spice, dark chocolate and generous, supple tannins and oak.

    Gary Walsh (2014 Vintage) says
Classic McLaren Vale Shiraz. It’s ferrous, chocolaty, black fruited, has some of that earth and oyster sauce stuff, liquorice, fine spicy French oak in support. Full-bodied, but not overweight, with a mass of dense inky tannin, balanced acidity, and a very long clean finish. Excellent.

    winemaker's notes

Ernest Allan was a market gardener and the grandfather of Melissa and Andrew Buttery. Ernest Allan Shiraz reflects the true character of our premium organic Shiraz blocks and the sustainable, chemical free farming that Ernest used to grow his produce so many years ago. This wine is literally Ernest - honest and true.

Winemaker's Notes: Ernest Allan Rivers was a natural farmer and grandfather of Melissa Brown (nee Buttery). He understood the relationship between the earth and his plants so we try to encapsulate his philosophy in this wine. We selected several iconic Shiraz sites that were harvested by hand on a fruit day as per our biodynamic philosophy. These special parcels were all picked at full flavour maturity and naturally fermented on skins for 12 days with hand plunging only for soft tannin extraction. The separate parcels were pressed off skins and drained into French oak barriques for ageing on their lees for extra texture. After 16 months in oak the wine was racked, blended and bottled with no filtration or fining.

Colour: Inky red with purple hue.

Nose: Intense aromatic profile with dark fruits, red fruit conserve, red spices and an almost mineral quality of the sea, or wet stone, all enhanced by creamy oak.

Palate: This is a concentrated, generous and balanced wine with lively fruit sweetness on the front palate rounding out with dark red fruits, chocolate and textural, chalky tannins. Right now (17 February 2016) the palate is in a time capsule. This wine will reward the patient and open up with time.

Food Pairings: Roast beef with feta mash, or kangaroo steak with cauliflower puree.

    Cellaring Potential: Now to 2030.

    Alc/vol: 13.8%
