Cracka Review

Vivid blackberry and cassis aromas on the nose with a soft earthiness. The palate shows typical Coonawarra expression with black fruits and fine tannins.

Winemaker's Notes

Shows a brooding dark red colour in the glass. The nose boasts of aromatic blackberry and blue fruits with refined hints of bay leaves and mint.

A great line of acidity drives through the wine supporting talc-y ripe tannins. Flavours of blackberry and mulberry shine from the medium bodied composition.

As with previous releases of ‘The Cover Drive’, the wine displays harmonious balance and can be enjoyed now or will reward cellaring for 5 years.

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
Drink to 2022.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
A straightforward rendition of cabernet in basic mode: some cassis and mint, leaf, plum and cedary oak in the background. The palate's fresh, with a quite tangy tannin/acid kick; tangy cassis and sturdy tannins waft through the finish. A pared-back style.

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
Strange to find a Coonawarra Cabernet not labelled as such. Even more unusual to find one as exact as this under $20. It's a secret especially worth knowing in the classic 2009 vintage. Shh!
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Although there are contradictory statements in the technical background to the wine, it seems this is a Coonawarra/ Clare Valley blend (not 100% Coonawarra) that produces a truly enjoyable, delicious red berry and cassis-fruited wine, the tannins and oak on the boundary. Drink whenever you wish.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
An appealing cabernet that has run rings around the vintage, cassis and blackcurrant fruit set in a lively background; gently spicy oak notes bring the innings to a close. Coonawarra the twelfth man?

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Good varietal cabernet with plenty of cassis and a mere suggestion of mint; quite fleshy, supple and long on the finish.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Minty, earthy overtones to berry fruit aromas of cassis and blackcurrant, flowing through to the palate with persistent tannins; needs 2+ years to get its eye in

Ken Gargett (2005 Vintage) says
A blend of fruit from Clare, the cricket-loving Barrys' home territory, and from a patch (should that be pitch?) of vineyard they own in Coonawarra. A fresh, ripe cabernet that avoids the miserable herbaceousness that can plague this variety. Won't be served during drinks on day one of the Boxing Day test, but worth drinking to celebrate a win. Brett Lees, Sticky Ponting and Rutherglen McGrath would approve.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Medium-bodied; gentle blackcurrant, earth and mulberry fruit; fine, ripe tannins, controlled oak.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Medium-bodied; an ultra-Coonawarra mix of earth and blackcurrant; the fruit grows on the back palate.
