Cracka Review

The Kumeu River chardys are a favourite with us, and this 'Estate' version packs a serious punch at this price. A little more serious than its baby brother the Village, this wine packed with stonefruit flavours and a nutty texture all wrapped up in spick oak. Ideal with roast chicken.

Winemaker's Notes

Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from six different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. We are particularly careful in selecting only the very best grapes from these vineyards for our Kumeu River Estate label. The Estate Chardonnay from this vintage is ripe, rich, and beautifully concentrated. The beautiful peach and hazelnut aromas along with the rich silky texture are distinct characteristics that we expect to see from this wine. This wine will benefit greatly from a period of two to four years.

2014 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Bob Campbell MW (2014 Vintage) says
20% new oak. Impressive Chardonnay with peach, stone fruit, toasted nut, brioche, vanilla and spicy oak. Great texture - quite rich with a suede-like feel. Lengthy wine with a good structure of gentle acidity and subtle tannins. Offers good value at this price. 5-6000 cases
Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
A very complex and convincing wine that shows immense complexity and freshness, really impressive, flinty, winemaker derived allure, some toasty oak and lively, ripe peach and citrus fruits, nectarine too. The palate s supple and fleshy, with impressive concentration that s accentuated by brisk acid crunch and offers impressive length.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
The estate-level chardonnay at Kumeu River is set pretty high in the scheme of things, Complex and beautifully delivered grilled-hazelnut aromas, flinty sulphides and bright, ripe, peachy stone fruits here. The palate's assertive and has focus and poise: it's ripe yet restrained, long and layered. A very classy chardonnay.

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
“You’ve got to be very fussy,” is Michael Brajkovich’s mantra, as he explains his regime of assessing every new barrel each year to determine which to buy again next year. It’s an attention to detail that extends to everything here, as evidenced in the immense definition and structural focus of this wine. Tightly honed citrus zest, grapefruit and white peach of great finesse meet notes of flint and gunpowder, pulling into an exciting focus of textural mouthfeel and outstanding persistence. One of the greats.

Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says
Michael Brajkovich has moved into a new gear with his chardonnay, and that's saying something - he was almost unmatched beforehand. Superbly refined and piercing fruit, bright citrus aromas, lemon blossom, oak toast and flinty winemaking complexity. The palate moves at a brisk, clean-cut pace, ripe pear fruits and a stunning crisp grapefruity finish.
