2014 Maxwell Four Roads Grenache

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This sassy little Grenache from Maxwell Wines is surprisingly elegant and medium-bodied for McLaren Vale, which makes it all the more slurpable, and a steal at the price! Lots of black cherry and raspberry scents run around the glass, along with hints of peppery spice. The palate is quite smooth and supple, with more red berry flavours, a lick of chocolaty oak, gentle tannins, and a dry, musky finish. It should kick on for another 3-5 years, but would be great with a slow-cooked pork shoulder.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour and Aroma: Dark cherry red. This wine display a perfumed nose with maraschino cherry and raspberry fruits coupled with savoury notes and subtle oak spice.

Palate: Fine tannins and mouth filling flavours are well balanced to make this wine approachable. Complex with nutmeg, sage, savoury fruits, fresh and delicate vanilla oak and fruit concentration from the old vines.

Cellaring potential: This wine is made to enjoy upon release, however it is expected that it will continue to give excellent flavours at 3 to 7 years of age, assuming satisfactory cellaring conditions.

Wine Companion (2014 Vintage) says
More substance and darker fruit characters than you might normally expect of the variety. Shots of aniseed and blackberry. Brighter raspberried notes break like sunshine out through the edges, casting a glow. This is grenache in a nice place.

The 2013 didn’t ring my bells but this 2014 does. Red-coloured but the heart is dark with liquorice and black cherried/berried flavour. Bright, sweet raspberry of course pipes up too. Firm-ish tannin. Feels complete. Tastes very good.

Cherry fruitiness, red berries, cherry jam, sweet spice, warm spice too, some dusty notes, cinnamon, inviting perfume whichever you come at it. Crunchy textured red of medium weight, gentle spice, glossy acidity, neat, fine finish. Great drinking to be had here. Spot on fancy quaffer.
