Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Deep red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is clean and fresh and fragrant, with floral and red berry nuances, the palate medium-bodied and elegantly framed with balanced soft tannins and refreshing acidity. There's a touch of elegance in this wine and it's great value for money.

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Matured for 16 months in new and used French and American oak. Full-bodied and robust, picking the eyes out of a typical McLaren Vale shiraz; licorice, dark chocolate, savoury/tarry nuances and firm, but ripe tannins are the architecture for the blackberry and plum fruit, positive oak the icing on the cake. Terrific value.

Coffee, chocolate, ripe plums, dried beef, something jammy in background, savouriness meets fruitiness, real fruit feel. Medium bodied, crunchy textures, , fine tannins, crisp acidity. Fresh fruitiness, good length, very high drinkability. It’s not a complex wine, but it’s joyous and pure – right on.

Deep, bright garnet; a dark and brooding bouquet of black fruits, mocha, licorice and sea salt; the palate is medium-bodied and muscular, with gravelly tannins and fresh acidity in balance.

Has ripe black fruits, elements of char and tar, and a fresh and vibrant personality, with lots of energy; unencumbered by heavy-handed winemaking, this is sure to please.

Deep purple-crimson; a wine with instantaneous appeal, its bouquet and palate very harmonious and complete; the supple, mouthfilling fruit has ripples of plum, licorice, cherry and mocha, the tannins silky soft on the long finish. Ready now, but will hold.

A slightly tawny colour, this is developing savoury character and has a meaty, rustic edge to the red and dark berry fruits. The palate s got plenty of simple flesh _ just arrests through the finish. Drink up.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Dense purple-red; the hallmark regional dark chocolate is present on both bouquet and palate, along with ripe blackberry fruit and mocha oak; the tannins are supple and prolong the finish; no issue at all with the alcohol.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2008 Vintage) says
The Maxwell winery is well established in McLaren Vale and, given the title of the famous song, I reckon using the name 'Silver Hammer' for a wine has long been a scratch they had to itch. Fair play to them. Juicy, flavoursome, easy to enjoy. Bang (get it?) on the money. Medium-bodied; this isn't a full-throttle monster. Flavours of blackberry and chocolate and earth, but the flavours are so well integrated that it mostly tastes, simply, like a good smooth red.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
The Maxwell crew has been around long enough to know what works in the Vale and how to bring it to fruition. This is a dense, juicy licorice, plum and spice McLAREN Vale shiraz with plenty of richness in both flavour and texture terms. It makes a solid case for drink-now appeal and will reward medium-term keeping.

Faintly hazy colour; has a complex array of aromas and flavours, with black fruits, spice, dark chocolate and mocha all present, but doesn't entirely escape the clutches of'07.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A powerful full-bodied palate; abundant black fruits, and even more abundant tannins needing to soften their grip.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Soft, relatively developed, mocha, chocolate and vanilla alongside light- to medium-bodied dark fruits; soft tannins.
