Cracka Review

Expressive, approachable and affordable is the philosophy behind the Jester label, and that's exactly what this wine is. It's a lush, juicy style of Shiraz that shows lots of black fruits and licorice notes on the nose, together with hints of savouriness. The palate is rich and flavoursome with soft spices, hints of mint and chocolate, with soft friendly tannins, and a smooth, fleshy finish. It would be great with spicy lamb chops.

Winemaker's Notes

Style: Intense, textured and showing pure fruit flavours, Jester Shiraz is our baby G.A.M using the same barrels in which G.A.M was previously aged. Jester Shiraz is made to be upfront and approachable for early appreciation, and delivers excellent quality for the price.

Winemaker notes: The Shiraz fruit for our Jester wine is crushed immediately after being delivered to us at the winery. We allow the skin and juice mix to warm naturally over a period of several days, after which it begins fermentation. The ferment is held cool, to retain the bright primary fruit characters which appear in the resulting wine. Following ferment we carefully press the wine to separate it from the skins.

Colour: Deep, dark red.

Nose: Bright, lifted and aromatic, with raspberry, blackberry, and choc-mint characters.

Palate: Full flavoured and elegant, packed with dark fruit flavours of plum and blackberry, complemented by dark chocolate, liquorice and white pepper spice. Structured and well balanced, with a velvety, savoury finish held taut by silky tannins and clean acidity.

Food pairing notes: Bistecca alla Fiorentina cooked over charcoal.

Cellaring: 2 - 6 years.

Expert Reviews

Wine Companion (2014 Vintage) says
The fruit is solid, the presentation is polished, the tannin is set just right. This is nicely done. It tastes of plum, blackberry, dark chocolate and smoked cedar wood, and it has both ripeness and balance down pat.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Good depth of colour; a very complex, but inviting, bouquet flows into a rich, plush medium-bodied palate with a cornucopia of blackberry, plum and dark chocolate flavours, neatly balanced by ripe tannins. Now or much later.
Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
A deliciously smooth and juicy young shiraz whose earthy, spicy bouquet of dark berries and plums marries neatly with meaty, chocolatey oak. Its supple but penetrative palate of pristine cassis, blackberry, dark plum flavours balances finely with fresh oak and a lively acidity, finishing with lengh and focus.

Australian Wine Companion 2013
Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Rich and juicy, this sumptuous, approachable and early-drinking shiraz has a pungent, meaty bouquet of dark berries, plums and musky marsala-like spices. Backed b hints of mint and menthol, it's initially bright and vibrant, with deep, briary flavours of dark plums and berries, but finishes slightly short, warm and sweet.
The Australian Wine Annual 2013
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Dense purple-crimson; the wine is all about controlled power, the fist in a velvet glove; the medium- to full-bodied palate rolls black fruits, a touch of licorice and a generous dash of dark chocolate into a seamless whole; you know the tannins and oak are there, but no more.
Australian Wine Companion 2012 2011
Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Slightly baked, with jammy aromas of plums, berries and fresh chocolatey oak before a rather forward and slightly soupy palate underpinned by a firmish, powdery extract that finishes with dehydrated, currant-like flavours and a hint of mineral.
The Australian Wine Annual 2012
James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Deep colour; very true to its terroir, but with a commendable juicy edge to its black fruit and dark chocolate core which adds suppleness to the back-palate and finish.
