2014 Moppity Vineyards Lock & Key Single Vineyard Reserve H
Moppity Vineyards are certainly putting the Hilltops region near Young on the map. This is a lovely, medium to fuller-bodied shiraz that shows abundant black cherries and anise spice on the nose, together with a lick of pepper. The cherries come through again on the palate, along with a touch a raspberry and plum, fine but solid tannins, and a long, lingering, spicy finish that will have you reaching for a top-up.
The '12 was awarded 4 gold medals, 95 points and was selected by James Halliday to show at the G20 Finance Summit. The '13 won 6 gold and awarded 96pts by James Halliday. However, the 2014 is the best vintage to date. From a moderate vintage, the wine has typical cool climate fragrance, spice and floral notes but underlaid by a core of rich, dark fruit. The tannins are wonderfully silky and judicious use of large French barrels has contributed another layer of complexity.
