2014 Mr. Riggs Ein Riese Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This aromatic little number from Mr Riggs gives a nod to the wines of Germany with his 'giant' riesling (Ein Riese means giant in German). It's citrusy, apple-like and floral, with a palate that has some richness and sweetness to it. It's all supported by racy acidity that leads to a crunchy, bright finish. It slips down easy, and would be great with Thai food.

Winemaker's Notes

None excites Ben more than old-world style Riesling, 'a giant' among wines. In this vein, he thought it only fitting that we give the seventh vintage of his silky smooth Adelaide Hills gem an appropriate name. "Ein Riese" is German for 'a giant', perfect for a giant, German style Riesling, don't you think? Whatever you decide, Mr. Riggs will be really happy if you take pleasure from his rendition of a traditional, old-world, German style Riesling. Perhaps his favourite creation.

Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke (2016 Vintage) says
Light straw hue and a shy, light bouquet, which evokes dried wildflowers. The wine is quite sweet and very fruity, around Kabinett-level residual sugar. The finish is soft and balanced, not jumping with acidity like a German Kabinett would be, but very pleasant.

Vey well-made and totally seductive, the combination of low alcohol, fresh lime/citrus fruit, and residual sugar judged to perfection. Great Chinese food friend. 10.5%

Light straw-green; one of those wines that are irresistible (as long as you are not averse to sugar in any shape or form), the palate is crammed with luscious sweet lime fruit, natural acidity just enough to provide balance.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Delightfully intense, balanced and moderately sweet, this kabinett-styled riesling ahs a floral fragrance of white peach, nectarine and freshly cut Fuji apple. Deliciously long and clean, with a vibrant stonefruit and citrusy fruitiness, it finishes with lingering flavour and some sugar, but easily controls its sweetness through its balance of refreshing acidity and calky texture.
