2014 PHI Single Vineyard Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Top Yarra Chardonnay with some very welcome years under its belt, this is delicious white wine with complexity to burn. Nougat and white peach, with everything backed by sensational acidity.

Winemaker's Notes

Philosophy: Chardonnay from this vineyard shows delicacy, complexity and minerality. Varietal intensity and oak influence are generally in balance with the vineyard site and seasonal characters.

Region: Yarra Valley.

Vineyard: Lusatia Park Vineyard is one of the most well known and respected vineyards in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley. A Block Chardonnay was planted in 1995 at quite close spacings. It faces north and produces intense but fine-boned long-living Chardonnay.

Season: A low cropping warmer season with a gentle balance of flavour, texture and acidity. Quite fine and composed considering the relatively warm February.

Tasting Note: Pale colour. Minerally, nuance of Chardonnay, subtle. Fine structure, creamy flavours, gentle acidity, slightly briney, delicious.

Winemaking: Fruit is hand picked into small crates, then chilled to 10°C before being hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. Juice is allowed to settle overnight and is then racked to barrel to complete fermentation using natural yeast. The wine completes malolactic fermentation to reduce the prominence of primary fruit characters and is then stirred intermittently until spring. In December, the wine is gravity racked and bottled in early January.

Food Pairing: These more full bodied styles match well with:
Creamy Pasta - white wine and cream sauces; mushroom risotto.
Chicken - grilled chicken; chicken caesar salad.
Hard Cheeses - parmesan; roumano; vintage gouda.

Additional Information: Suitable for Vegans & Vegetarians.

Alc/vol: 12.5%

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
P58 clone planted '85, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, fermented in used French oak, 100% MLF, matured for 8 months on lees. A complex wine opens with restrained honeydew melon, white peach, pear, then a creamy/nutty overlay, coming back on the finish with citrussy acidity.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Pale straw-green; a very refined style with primary emphasis on mouthfeel, texture and structure, paradoxically stemming from the fruit rather than the oak; it is creamy, yet fine, the stone fruit flavours subtle, the acidity gently drawing out the long finish.

Ray Jordan (2011 Vintage) says
This precise and delicate chardonnay is all about site. It comes from the Shelmerdine family's Lusatia Park Vineyard where the site, its aspect and microclimate produce wonderful fruit expression ideally suited to this minimalist winemaking approach. Winemaker Steve Webber has captured the site and variety perfectly.
