2014 Plantagenet Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Still one of the most collectable and age-worthy reds from the Mount Barker region, the Plantagenet Shiraz shows it’s not all Cabernet in the west. Give it a decant and pair it with steak to see just how good this iconic red is. Indulge your senses in a vivid nose of blackberry, chocolate and hints of vanilla with notes of peppery spice. The palate is complex and layered with a captivating structure that will have you in raptures.

2014 Plantagenet Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Composed, well-tailored wine. Complex nose of autumn leaves, tar, sweet blackberry and smoky oak. Blends savoury, spicy, leafy elements with powerful, dark-berried fruits confidently and well. Has a seamlessness to it. Has a reach of fine, rippling tannin working positively throughout. Difficult to fault.

Bright, medium deep red-purple; the bouquet is positively perfumed, with spice, pepper and licorice woven through the red fruits, fruits that drive the silky, medium-bodied palate through to its long finish; the oak and tannin management have been exemplary.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
A Savoury, finely crafted and handsomely oaked young Rh“ne-inspired shiraz of of true class. It's peppery, floral and spicy, with sweet aromas of briary redcurrants, blackberries and plums with a hint of cherry tightly knit with fresh smoky, meaty and fine-grained new French oak backed by nuances of chocolate and mocha. It's silky and elegant, medium in weight, with a juicy, almost sappy presence of pristine small berry/cherry fruit underpinned by gentle, finely balanced tannins.

Good crimson colour; brings to the table all the things expected of medium-bodied Mt Barker shiraz: spice and a touch of licorice, ripe red and black berry fruits, and fine tannins; oak too, is where it should be.

Deep vibrant red black colour. The nose is immediately exciting with a mix of spices, black pepper and concentrated saturated plummy fruit aromas. There's a little spicy plum and licorice character on the palate with tight fine grained oak adding some weight. Rich and textured but a firm structural core providing the definition. Touch of funk on the palate adds to the complexity.

An artfully balanced and Rhoney shiraz whose heady, wild and spicy bouquet of dark plums, blackberries and sweet aromatic vanilla oak is backed by black pepper, cloves and licorice. It's long, dark and slightly meaty, with deep spicy palate tightly knit with a firm, rather bony backbone of fine tannin that simply soaks up its measured complement of oak influence, finishing seamless and savoury with lingering suggestions of dark fruit, gamy complexity and cracked pepper.

A ripe and savoury bouquet with redcurrant and blackberry, framed by mineral complexity and a little roast meat; the palate is quite chewy in texture, but has a litheness to the fruit that draws out the very long, and quite juicy conclusion.

When the vintage is right, and it was in 2007, then these Plantagenet shiraz are some of the finest you will find anywhere in Australia. This is right up there with the finest yet from this historic producer. Warm savoury spicy aromas create a compelling complex bouquet. Beautiful savoury and ever so slightly earthy palate with ripe tannins, perfectly worked oak and sumptuous fruit. Great cellaring potential.

Shows the good vintage to full effect; a tapestry of black fruit flavors, spices and pepper, augmented by quality oak and ripe tannins; great line and length

Distinguished, medium-bodied wine; spicy notes are woven through blackberry and black cherry fruit; fine, but ripe, tannins and quality oak.

Medium-bodied savoury style with a lick of black pepper and meaty charcuterie in the raspberry finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
A firm, fine and tightly knit shiraz with pungent, expressive wild and briary fruits neatly entwined with fine tannins and sweet chocolatey oak. There's a meatiness about Its aromas of black berry fruits, with undertones of cedar and vanilla. Medium to full in weight, it's smooth and savoury, finishing with suggestions of licorice, mint and a hint of eucalypt.

Oozes blackberry, black cherry and spice aromas, the palate at once plush yet elegant, perfectly proportioned and weighted, finishing with fine, ripe tannins.

This has been consistently one of the best wines from Plantagenet and over the years they have made some crackers. This is up there with the very best. Opens savory and slightly spicy. It has a lush supple and velvety smooth palate, though the tannins provide substance and a rigid spine

James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; a moderately intense and quite fragrant bouquet has a mix of spicy, earthy, juicy, berry fruit; the palate has excellent texture and structure, with red berry fruit, spice, fine tannins and subtle oak. The only caveat is that it may develop relatively quickly.

James Halliday (1996 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; a quite potent bouquet with solid berry and earth varietal character is followed by a palate redolent of sweet, black cherry and blueberry fruit; succulent and satisfying.
