2014 Te Mata Estate Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc

Out of Stock

Winemaker's Notes

Since 1984, Cape Crest has developed an international following for its unique expression of New Zealand sauvignon blanc. Barrel fermented, with a touch of semillon and sauvignon gris, it is concentrated and complex with toast, citrus blossom, pear and stonefruit characters.

A barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc with concentrated characters of pears, lime and toast with a lingering finish. Cape Crest can be enjoyed upon release and develops a mid-palate richness with 2-3 years cellaring.

2014 Te Mata Estate Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Gary Walsh (2015 Vintage) says
One of the wilder, more funky expressions of Sauvignon about. They do a good job of it too at Te Mata. Smoky, spicy, tomato plant, marzipan, passionfruit and guava. Medium bodied, a riot of citrus, smoke and vanilla, herbal perfume, with zesty grapefruit acidity, bursting through the finish with lime and vanilla, zip and tang. It’s a 60s Batman TV series fight scene of a wine!!

Raymond Chan (2015 Vintage) says
Bright, pale straw-yellow colour. The nose is full with sweetly ripe, densely packed aromas of ripe greengages and nectarines, unfolding an array of green stone fruits and tropical fruits entwined with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty complexing layers. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate possesses rich and layered, mouth-filling flavours of greengages, citrus and stone fruits along with tropical fruits, lantana, dark herbs and nutty oak. The mouthfeel is rounded and creamy, the wine following a fine line of grip and texture with good acid tension. This is lush and rich, and quite approachable now, but will keep 4+ years. A blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc, 11% Sauvignon Gris and 4% Semillon, fruit predominantly from the ‘Bullnose’ vineyard with a portion from ‘Isosceles’, barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 8 months in 30% new oak with batonnage.
Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Light yellow colour with a complex, barrel fermented bouquet which shows nut and spice aromas, together with lovely ripe (but not shrill) Sauvignon fruit. The wine has terrific intensity and depth of palate, a touch of richness and a lingering, balanced aftertaste. Delicious wine, a Savvy with real character.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Medium yellow-green; the bouquet is very ripe, with passionfruit and peach aromas, the oak barely evident. The palate is much more restrained than the bouquet, with an attractive mineral cut to the clean finish.

James Halliday (1996 Vintage) says
Bright, light green-yellow; a quite complex bouquet with obvious barrel-ferment inputs into ripe fruit which could almost be mistaken for a cool-climate Chardonnay, with hints of melon and fig. The oak is less assertive on the relatively delicate palate which is crisp and clean, with a tight, faintly smoky/spicy finish.
