2014 Torres Vina Esmeralda Moscatel Gewurztraminer

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Olé! You can almost hear the bull-fighters panting after a hot day’s work in the ring! What’s going to sate their thirst after a run in with a hooved beast? This cheeky white blend of course, which fuses the Moscatel grape with the lifted aromatic Gewurztraminer to heighten the aromas and mouthfeel. This is all about sensuous curves and deliciously seductive perfume, showing wild flowers and citrus before and elegant and mouth-filling palate that’s got real texture. It’s a good food wine as well, you could stick with the Spanish theme and pair it with paella.

Winemaker's Notes

In the mountainous area of the Upper Penedès the more delicate and aromatic white grape varieties are grown. Moscatel and Gewürtztraminer form the basis for Viña Esmeralda, an exceptionally delicate and strikingly fragrant wine.

This wine takes its name from the emerald colour of the Mediterranean and is made from the varieties Mosacatel de Alejandría (85%) and Gewürztraminer (15%).

A voluptuous, exotically perfumed nose, with deliciously well-defined primary aromas (some floral notes, roses, lilies), complemented by secondary aromas derived from the wine’s controlled fermentation. Silky and sappy on the palate.

Excellent with shellfish (a sublime match for an avocado and shellfish salad, for instance), as well as with fish, fresh melon with cured Spanish ham, pâtés, poultry or pork in a sweet and sour sauce. Serve at 11ºC.

Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer (2005 Vintage) says
The zesty, vivacious 2005 continues an unbroken run of excellence for this, our favourite Spanish white wine. The value for money and sheer crowd-pleasing aroma and flavour of Esmeralda are staggering. I (Matthew) have sold/recommended this wine every year since I have been in the wine trade (I am in my twentieth!). This is an unmatchable achievement – Miguel Torres is a superstar. Exotic on the nose and bracingly dry on the finish – a recipe for success! You cannot avoid this wine.
