2014 Two Paddocks Picnic Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Owned by actor Sam Neil, this is no rich persons hobby farm. The wines from Two Paddocks are serious contenders in the wine world, and this bonny little riesling is no different. An abundance of limy citrus, white stone fruits and lemon sorbet rise from the glass and tempt the senses, whilst the palate has a kiss of sweetness up front before citrus and slight savouriness hits the palate, before the crunchy acidity creates a dry, crisp, refreshing finish. It's pretty good value, and would go well with oysters.

Winemaker's Notes

Featuring the Proprietor’s Grandfather, Sydney Neill – Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic Riesling is our perennial favourite and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Riesling. We think it is just as much a dinner wine as a luncheon – equally enjoyable at home outdoors, as at the Captain’s Table.

A cool spring produced slow growth until November, which along with parts of December, was above average warmth. Flowering started in the first week of December and lasted over three weeks. All vines including the Rieslings were only green thinned and shoulders removed in the same pass. Very little disease pressure and we harvested on the 16th April 2014.

Stone fruit and spice aromatics followed by a supple and superbly textured mouth-feel. This wine displays great density and persistence.

Alcohol: 12.5%

Mike Bennie (2014 Vintage) says
Vibrant bouquet that smells like a bunch of flowers with some citrus scattered through it, and a touch of steely tang chiming in. Light on in flavour, feels washy and a bit dilute, good citrus twang through the wine, some apple juiciness too, but metallic tang overrides a bit.
