Cracka Review

The 2014 Tyrrell's Special Release Hunter Shiraz is a total one-off, members only wine that has never before been made, and is likely never to be repeated. With fruit taken from the Weinkeller vineyard (where Vat 9 has been sourced for many years,) and a tiny portion from the Steven's vineyard, it's not hard to guess why this is one doozy of a drop.

Winemaker's Notes

Arguably the best Hunter Valley vintage since the legendary 1965.

The Story of Special Release: Our Special Release range showcases wines that are limited production, one-offs, trial batches, or just anything unique or different. You never know what you might see in this range and just because you see something here once, there’s no guarantee you’ll see it here again.

Vintage Conditions: A perfect growing season was experienced in the Hunter Valley for the 2014 vintage. Fine, dry weather produced lower crops with amazing depth of flavours. Many have compared the 2014 Shiraz wines to the legendary vintage of 1965.

Winemaker’s Notes: Predominately from our Weinkeller vineyard, the grapes were fermented in the traditional open top concrete vats and were pumped over three times daily. After fermentation the wine was transferred into mostly older French oak casks (2700L) for maturation until bottling in August 2015.

Tasting Notes: Bright purple in colour. Fresh savoury spice and lifted red berry nose, with a subtle oak lift. A concentrated palate showing red fruits with subtle oak that enhances the mid palate, which is extended by the fine clean acid structure.

Pair with: Roasted meats.

Alc/vol: 14.0%

2014 Tyrrells Special Release Hunter Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Full crimson-purple; a halfway house to the great wines yet to be released by Tyrrell's at significantly higher prices. Aged in old large oak, the emphasis is on the complex red and black array of fruits, tannins the wicket keeper for the fruit.
Drink by 2034
Gary Walsh (2014 Vintage) says
Blackberry, boysenberry, liquorice, light spice and vanilla, gentle dusty earthiness. Medium-bodied, red and black fruits, silky tannin, pitch perfect acidity, fresh berried finish of excellent length. The drinking pleasure is high with this one.
2016 - 2030
Nick Stock (2014 Vintage) says
This has a redder fruit focus with plenty of liquorice and hints of coal smoke, the palate is classic Hunter Valley Shiraz shape, mid-weight, great length and focus, really even and supple, drink now and for 5+ years.
