Cracka Review

Villa Maria remain one of the most awarded and prolific producers coming out of Marlborough, and it’s not just the Sauvignon Blanc that they are famed for. This Chardonnay was sourced from Gisborne and Hawkes Bay with a touch of Marlborough so that the full spectrum of Chardonnay flavours can express themselves. Peach, pear and citrus provide the intense aromas and all appear on the palate amidst some nutty oak complexity. A wine with an exquisite creamy texture that is well structured and balanced.

Winemaker's Notes

This Chardonnay has been crafted to capture the regional essence of Hawkes Bay. It is full of ripe peach and mealy stone fruit flavours, finely balanced with an edge of minerality. The wine's fresh, fruit-driven style makes it suitable for everyday enjoyment, and a wonderful alternative to wooded style Chardonnay.

2014 Villa Maria Private Bin Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
This is a simple, bright and primary style of chardonnay, with the full gamut of tinned-fruit aromas on show: peach, pear and gentle tropical nuances. The palate's supple, smooth and creamy, with more pear and light mango here. Drink up.
The Good Wine Guide
Michael Cooper (1995 Vintage) says
The latest releases of this popular, predominantly Gisborne-grown wine are the best yet. The 1995 vintage, a blend of far-flung regions - 80 per cent Gisborne, 15 per cent Marlborough and 5 per cent Mangere fruit - is a good commercial style with plenty of body, fresh, uncluttered lemon and melon-evoking flavours, very restrained wood and a crisp, tangy finish. The '%, grown in Gisborne, is the finest wine yet under this highly affordable label There's some French and American oak influence adding richness (15 per cent of the final blend was matured briefly in seasoned oak casks), but the wine is basically about fruit. The bouquet offers fresh, ripe, scented fruit aromas; the palate is full and flavoursome, with excellent depth of ripe, extremely delicate fruit flavour, supported by finely balanced acidity. A very elegant fruit-driven style, offering lovely drinking now to 1998.
