2014 West Cape Howe Cape to Cape Cabernet Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

We could tell you about the skill and artistry that goes into the winemaking at West Cape Howe - how the soil imparts, great flavour or how the climate helps ripen berries to their full potential. But we know you just want to ask, “should I buy this wine?” The answer is a resounding yes, because like so many Cabernet Merlot blends from W.A. it’s laden with flavour and just a joy to drink. You’ll find licorice, vibrant berries and a little oak with a soft, long-lasting finish. It’s a wine that keeps on giving in the flavour department.

Winemaker's Notes

Blend: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot

Colour: A beautifully deep, purply red

Aroma: Aromatic dark berry fruits with some fresh plum fruit aromas and attractive smoky oak characters

Palate: Intense flavours of fresh berry fruits like blackberries; the good depth of these fruit flavours are complemented by the slightly ‘chewy’ and gently drying tannins which combine to give the Cab Merlot it’s good length of flavour. Enjoy now or even more so after a couple of years in the cellar

Cellar Potential: 3 - 5 years

Alc/vol: 14.5%

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
Bright crimson-purple presages a fragrant bouquet of blackcurrant and redcurrant fruit, which in turn leads onto a supple, medium-bodied palate, awash with delicious cassis tempered by some cedar ex French oak, together with fine-grained tannins. Notwithstanding the low price, some seriously good fruit has been used to make this wine.
