2015 Bethany Select Late Harvest Riesling (500ml)

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here's a value dessert wine for people who are looking for a bit of sweetness in their lives. It's uncomplicated and easy to drink with some appealing pear and orange aromas and flavours. The palate is sweet, light and moscato-like with some lusciousness to the finish. Perfect for light desserts, or chilled as a party starter.

Winemaker's Notes

Made from very low yielding vines, cordon pruned and hand-picked long after the general Bethany harvest, this elegant late-harvest Riesling is complex and displays wonderful passionfruit and citrus characters on both nose and palate followed by a superb fresh, crisp finish. With careful cellaring, it will improve in depth, flavour and complexity. It goes very well with melon, tropical fruits and baked cheesecake. It is also a superb accompaniment to soft, creamy cheeses like brie and camembert.

Cellaring potential: One to five years

Alc/vol: 7.5%

Fresh and racy, this fragrant and voluminous riesling deftly marries sweetness with racy acidity and a fine underlying chalkiness. Its intense, floral aromas of pear, apple and tropical fruits precede a round, luscious palate whose generous presence of vibrant fruit culminates in a fresh. 2002 focused and balanced finish of tangy lemony acidity.

Slightly flat, tinny and varnishy this moderately sweet, long and chalky riesling reveals penetrative up-front flavours of pear and apple that become rather flat, sour-edged and spiky towards the finish. Lacking in freshness, length and brightness.

Generous and juicy fresh and fruity, with slightly spicy and spiky flavours of Packham pear, apple and lime juice and a lingering palate of medium sweetness and lusciousness. With lemon sherbet like and powdery texture, it finishes with refreshing acids and a hint of spiciness.

Quite intense lemon/lemon tart/lime aromas and flavours; excellent acidity and length.

Spicy, marmalade-like aromas of citrusy fruit precede a forward, rather cloying, candied and luscious palate. It's very sweet and juicy, but lacks a little freshness and brightness, finishing without much acid definition and tightness.

Old-fashioned, perhaps, but has the acidity and structure to improve for as long as the cork holds in the 500 ml bottle.

A juicy, tangy dessert wine of medium sweetness whose delicate floral and citrusy aromas reveal interesting suggestions of beeswax. Forward and only moderately luscious, its lively flavours of pear, apple and apricot culminate in a slightly metallic finish.

Clean and refreshing, moderately sweet wine with fresh, honeyed and floral aromas of candied lime and a generous, ripe and tangy palate. It's forward and luscious, with up-front fruit flavours, but finishes clean and refreshing, without cloying.

Rich, direct tropical fruit; fully sweet, but good acid balance.

Light green-yellow; rich, intense, tropical lime fruit on the bouquet leads into a palate with nicely balanced sweetness and acidity; plenty of length and flavour. Sold in a sensible 500 ml bottle.

Golden yellow; the bouquet has the honey, mead and peach aromas which often come from cordon-cut wines, and the flavours of the palate continue the thread, with the addition of some cumquat. Of Auslese sweetness, but not particularly complex.
