Cracka Review

There are so many family stories in the wine industry and the Bowens are another one of those who continue to produce the goods, vintage after vintage. In fact Bowen are one of the stars of the Coonawarra region producing consistently excellent Shiraz. We love the aromas of this Shiraz tending towards cherries and berries with undertones of leather and cedar. The palate is lengthy, structured and full of soft tannin. It’s great for cellaring in the short term, however we suggest you try some now with some rare beef or cheese.

Winemaker's Notes

Vintage: The growing season started with great early winter rains. Following an even budburst, flowering continued with a warm spring and little wind; great conditions for a good berry set. Summer weather was ideal from veraison through to ripening with warm days and cool nights. Excellent flavour ripeness and acid balance. Crop levels were moderate with small berry size.

Wine: A fabulous run of vintages in Coonawarra including the 2015. This wine gleams brilliant dark purple in the glass as an example of an exceptional vintage. Our Ampelon heritage clone vineyards are now truly shining. Richness of classic Shiraz characters are complimented by fresh elegant American oak flavour on the nose. The rich fruit characters are again evident on the palate and leave your mouth singing with bright seductive fruit flavours well balanced with fine long classic Coonawarra tannins. This is a beautiful wine to drink now, but will evolve into a little beauty with age.

Drink: Over the next 5 - 7 years.

Food: Casseroles, tagine, white meat and soft cheeses.

The Australian Wine Annual 2014 Edition
Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
An elegant and stylish wine that would have been even better without the sweet and spirity impact of 15% alcohol. Its deep, slightly earthy, meaty and gamy aromas of blackberries and plums are laced with black pepper, musky spices and sweet suggestions of chocolate/vanilla oak. Long, dark and savoury, its slightly sour-edged presence of dark plums and berries, smoked meats and minerals culminates in a savoury but slightly spirity and graphite-like mineral finish.

This wine's intense flavours and balanced structure indicate a terrific capacity to age. Getting better each year, subtle oak, juicy, spicy, red and black berry fruit.
Australian Wine Vintages 2010 2009
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A welcome return to top form; touches of spice to the black fruits of the bouquet, then a lively medium-bodied palate with ripples of black fruits, spice and cedary oak; good tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Very smooth and classy, with a spicy, heady perfume of cassis, iris, lavender and fine-grained cedar/chocolate/ vanilla oak backed by undertones of black pepper. Moderately rich and elegant, its intense palate of pristine, luscious berry/plum flavour and sweet oak is supported by a silky cut of fine tannin, finishing with lingering sour-edged fruit and gamey complexity.

Bowen Estate is still a favourite of red-wine drinkers and rightly so: it's an honest outfit of full-flavoured wines. Quality is now steadily on the rise after a slight blip. Bowen Shiraz's fan base will like this. It has ropes of tannins and spots of black pepper, though at heart it's cherried and curranty and robust. It's not what you would call a brightly flavoured wine (and it arguably lacks definition - to get all wine nerdy on you), but it has guts and structure. Very good.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Dusty aromas of sweet juicy small black and red berries, smoky vanilla French oak, white pepper, cloves and cinnamon precede a firm, pliant palate of length and richness. Backed by smooth, creamy oak, it is plush, fractionally meaty and currant-like,but has enough deep and bright, vibrant fruit for sound medium-term cellaring.
Australian Wine Annual 2008 2007
Jeremy Oliver (2004 Vintage) says
Elegant, fine-grained and deeply fruited, this is a marvellously long, firm and sumptuous modern shiraz. Laced with the scent of violets, its deep aromas of blackberries, blueberries, dark chocolate and meaty complexity reveal spicy undertones of doves, cinnamon and dark olives. Its long and sour-edged palate is framed by fine, drying tannins, finishing with a tangy note of mineral salt.
Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006
Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says
A restrained and finely presented, measured shiraz whose spicy, peppery fragrance of pristine cassis, dark plum, blackberry and mulberry fruit is supported by lightly toasty cedar/vanilla oak. Not especially complex, it offers a palate of full to medium weight and vibrant, dark-fruited and chocolate-like flavour backed by sweet oak and framed by fine, silky tannins. Long and minty, it's polished and restrained, with undertones of forest floor.
Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005
Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
An ethereal perfume of spicy cloves, cinnamon and licorice overlies deep aromas of raspberries, cassis and plums, with undertones of white pepper, rosemary and sweet vanilla/cedar oak. Long, smooth and sumptuous, its deep, pristine fruit, creamy oak and leathery game meat-like complexity culminate in a lingering finish of balance and harmony. Very stylish, very classy.

Good drink but lacks substance.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet is crammed with complex fruit and oak, swelling into dark plum, licorice and vanilla on the palate, finishing with plentiful, ripe tannins. A rich, traditional style. Gold medal Limestone Coast Wine Show 2002.
Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (1998 Vintage) says
Rich, blackberried, spicy-fruit force.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; an ultra-classic Australian red bouquet; rich, with complex fruit and sweet oak. The palate delivers all that the bouquet promises, with abundant flavour in the red berry spectrum coupled with almost Italianate tannins, and complementary oak.
Australian Wine Companion 2001 2001
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (1997 Vintage) says
Stylish flavour and nutty oak. Excellent.

Excellent result from a difficult vintage.
