2015 Brokenwood Hunter Valley Semillon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

We often talk of the triumphant trio in wine where the producer, region and variety combine to bring you the best. Here’s a classy example of the Hunter Valley, Semillon and Brokenwood creating a magnificent threesome. As a young wine it shows aromas of lemon and straw before a sweet fruit palate of lime and apple and an excellent acid structure ensuring it will last for years. This will of course develop after 5 years and become like honey on toast.

Winemaker's Notes

The cool year has resulted in more grass/hay fruit characters. The colour is perfect, lots of luminous green tints. There are citrus notes to the aromas as well. Lighter, fresh lime and lemongrass flavours on release as a young wine. Great acidity, and the 10.5% alcohol is perfect for summer drinking.

Alc/Vol: 10.5%

2015 Brokenwood Hunter Valley Semillon

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2013 Vintage) says
In extreme youth, lime blossom and pink grapefruit highlight a pretty bouquet. The palate is taut, honed and persistent, with a linear acid spine, tightly coiled structure and slaty texture. Great now, and short-term potential.

A mesmerising paradox: Moreish from day one and it can live for thirty years, as a recent vertical proved! The 2011 is clean and even, with precise lemon juice and cut grass lingering fine and long; a delicate flick of ripeness provides approachability on the finish. A confident vintage for this label.

If practice ever made perfect, surely it is with this wine, made to be enjoyed young, but still able to repay medium-term cellaring. Pale quartz; the bouquet is clean and pure, with cut grass and apple/citrus aromas, the palate fresh and lively, building impact on the back-palate and finish, yet doing so with delicate, rather than phenolic, flavours.

Pale quartz-green; right in the mainstream of Hunter Valley semillon, still delicate on the bouquet, but with a palate full of nervous energy (nervosity in French) and tingling citrus/lemongrass flavours running through to a very long finish.

A good all-rounder, this offers a mix of grassy elements and intense lemon citrus too - really settled and expressive in its youth. The palate has a fine, tangy entry with some rounder shape building through the middle and plenty of citrus flavour through the finish. Balanced like a champ!

Definitively vibrant, vivacious, youthful semillon. Lemongrass, green apple, plenty of citrus fruit, cut grass & fresh basil in the mouth. Bright & zesty.

A delicate yet positive flowery bouquet hints at what is to come on the vivid mid-palate, with citrus to the fore, and background touches of stone fruits; the zesty acidity cleanses the finish and guarantees a long life if you wish to cellar it.

Drink it now, drink it in a decade, you can’t lose in any great vintage of this ambidextrous semillon! Lemon and lime now, lanolin and toast later, with a glorious undercurrent of minerality that won’t fade. $17 at Kemeny’s and Dan Murphy’s and $18 at WineStar.

Crisp parsley, celery herbals on release, after 3 years grows smoother showing hints of honey, lanolin and wax.

Crisp, fresh, zesty aromas and flavours, gaining velocity on the back-palate and finish, with notes of lemon/lemon rind; lingering aftertaste.

Water-white; an ultra-crisp and fresh web of mineral, grass and spice, rather like a toned-down Chablis.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
A delicate, tobaccoey fragrance of white flowers, melon and lemon precedes a long, fresh and vibrant palate whose piercing varietal fruit is underpinned by fine, chalky phenolics and tightly focused around racy, refreshing acids. It's long, lean and vibrant, with delightful regional tautness and focus.

Spotlessly clean; a classic young semillon, finely tuned and honed notes of lemon rind, herb, spice and mineral; great acidity and mouthfeel.

Long, taut and refreshing, this lightly herbal semillon marries delicate, slightly candied melon and lemon flavours with a tea tin-like spiciness. Of medium intensity, it's fine and restrained but also surprisingly juicy and concentrated, culminating in a typically tight, dry and acidic finish. More traditional and regional than previous vintages, which have been more grassy and aromatic.

Vibrantly fresh and crisp; spotlessly clean; lemony, grassy, minerally flavours; citrussy acidity; dry finish. Spot on the money.

Lightly herbal and grassy aromas of fresh melon, gooseberry and hints of rosewater precede a juicy and very intense, mouthfilling and tangy palate whose herbaceous expression of intense melon fruit culminates in a vibrant acid finish. There's a lightly chalky spine beneath the fruit and the promise of some development.

Lightly grassy, with delicate lemon sherbet, bath-powder and melon aromas, this chalky, herbal semillon culminates in a closed, slightly cloying and apparently stressed finish refreshed with lemon detergent-like acids.

Shows semillon's ability to shrug off inclement vintage rain. Delicate but fragrant fresh grass, lemon zest and spice aromas lead into a crisp, mouth-tingling palate with a long, bright finish. Understated style.

Bright mineral, grass and herb aromas expand in the mouth, with gently sweet fruit on the mid-palate providing exemplary balance right through to the lingering finish.
