Leaner, tighter and much less oak-driven than they once were, the best modern Chardies are more delicious than ever, and this is the best Australian Chardonnay we've tried all year. Sourced from the Brookland Valley Estate vineyard in Wilyabrup - which was first planted in 1983 - this was handpicked and whole-bunch-pressed to barrel. Wild fermented, it then spent a further 9 months in oak. This is a stunning wine!

Winemaker's Notes

A full bodied, generous wine with flavours showing Margaret River richness.

Background information: Located along Caves Road, in the heart of the premium wine region of Margaret River, Brookland Valley is a truly beautiful estate. The picturesque property spans 52ha, consisting of vineyards established in 1983 planted to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

Vintage 15: The 2015 vintage in Margaret River was characterised by persistent warm and dry conditions which resulted in an earlier than expected timing of harvest. Also contributing to the earlier picking was lower than average yields in the Chardonnay resulting in intensely flavoured fruit with bright, balanced acidity.

Winemaking: Sourced from the Brookland Valley Estate vineyard in Wilyabrup, the fruit was hand-picked and then whole bunch pressed to tank before transfer to French Oak barriques for fermentation. This enables the winemakers to retain freshness and achieve fineness of flavour. The fermentation was completed with indigenous yeasts which contribute texture and complexity to the wine. Following primary ferment, the wine was left on yeast lees for a period of 9 months. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation on yeast lees, with occasional stirring of the lees in barrel, providing a creamy texture and length.

Tasting notes: Pale straw in colour with a youthful green tinge, this wine displays bright lifted aromatics of pink grapefruit, nectarine, ginger spice, and lemon zest with hints of struck match, honeycomb and nougat. An overlay of cashew nut and fresh brioche notes derived from barrel fermentation round off this intensely aromatic wine. A wine of finesse and power, this full bodied Chardonnay displays classic varietal characters – rich, sumptuous and intense fruit flavours. Barrel fermentation and yeast lees maturation provide complexity and texture that, with a fine acid line, deliver elegance and length of flavour.
