Cracka Review

Do you know what? We don't eat enough goose these days. That is a shame as goose can be very tasty indeed (and geese can be angry creatures, best eaten). Regardless, this Shiraz is classic Vale fare - rich, mid palate driven with that lovely thick choc plum fruit and soft tannins. Lots of flavour, lots of power and lots of glory.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Attractive rich red with dark purple hues

Aroma: Powerful heady mix of spicy red plum and forest berries, such as raspberries and blackberries. Balancing this is some lifted five-spice savouriness, and well integrated oak freshness

Palate: Rich and supple, yet showing finesse and restraint, with layers of blackberry, spice, plum and bitter chocolate. A very easy drinking style with excellent control of oak and tannins leaving the fruit flavours in charge

Process: Grapes from 3 separate vineyards were harvested at the peak of flavour ripeness, and crushed separately. Fermentation proceeded for 8 days in upright static fermenters at around 20-23°C. The wine was pumped over skins twice per day, and was run off skins and pressed at 2 degrees Baume.

Cellaring: 5 - 8 years

Alc/vol: 14.9%

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Strong, deep crimson-purple; all the desired elements of medium-bodied McLaren Vale shiraz are here, and are in perfect balance; soft, dark fruits, a whirl of dark chocolate, cedary oak and spices are all given their say, and do so eloquently, backed by fine, ripe tannins.
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Deep crimson; manages to combine power with finesse; a beautifully proportioned and balanced wine, the bouquet leading seamlessly into the fore- and mid-palate, thence the finish. Along the way black fruits, whiffs of cedar, spice and dark chocolate have their say without any arguments.

WINESTATE (2007 Vintage) says
Spicy complexity of aromas and big, thick and fruity in the mouth. A touch raw for now. 3-5

WINESTATE (2006 Vintage) says
A generous wine that starts as it finishes. Plenty of dark Christmas cake complexity with just a hint of greenness.
