2015 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2013 Vintage) says
Warm days and cool nights have created a remarkable Clonakilla; gloriously exotic, yet distinguished, effortless and refined, a statement of impeccable precision engineering and intricate balance.
WBM Reviews September, 2014
James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Has the best colour of the '12 Clonakilla red wines, hardly a surprise; the bouquet is supremely fragrant, almost flowery/scented, the palate instantaneously imprinting its total harmony and balance; fruit, oak and tannins are all seamlessly interwoven, the length prodigious. Low yields were the secret.

Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition
Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
A gentle, willowy blend that initially flaunts its viognier content, but then which steadily unfolds surprising layers of depth and texture. Its floral, musky perfume of blue and red flowers, dark berries, red cherries and plums reveals undertones of pepper and tightly knit cedar/vanilla oak. It's long and supple, with a dusty, faintly stalky spine of mouth-watering tannin beneath a bright, translucent presence of penetrative, fruit and earthy undertones, finishing fine and savoury with a very persistent core of flavour and a lingering hint of meatiness.
The Australian Wine Annual
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2009 Vintage) says
The rise in status of this wine over the past ten years has been phenomenal. It is now a contender for the mantle of Australia's best red wine'. It commands extremely strong prices on the auction circuit too. We tasted the finished blend of this wine but it hadn't yet been bottled, which rules it out of our calculations for Red Wine of the Year, and indeed doesn't allow us to award it an official rating here. It has to be in this book, though, because it is superb, and contends for the title of the best Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier yet. It is so silken, so finely tannic and so persistent. It tastes of roasted meats, dark cherries, boysenberries and a wild array of spices. The way its tannin curls through the finish is quite astonishing.

The Australian Wine Annual 2014 Edition
Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
Building towards a crescendo of richness and strength, this is a stellar wine of rare balance, poise and elegance. Its floral, musky and spicy bouquet of pristine black and red berries, ground pepper and cedar/vanilla oak precedes a silky-smooth, supple and seamless palate whose piercingly intense berry/plum flavours, briary undertones and seasoned oak deliver exceptional length and harmony. Precisely focused, it finishes quite savoury and spicy, with emphatic depth and presence.
Australian Wine Annual 2010
James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
As expected the wine is young and buoyant, with a highly fragrant perfume of red fruit, fresh blackberry, violets, roast meat and a little tar; the palate reveals the true potential of this superb wine, with a cascading array of flavours and thrillingly silky tannin, poised acidity and a peacocks tail on the very long and precise palate
Australian Wine Companion 2010
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Vivid colour; it is hard to imagine how more flavour could be generated at this alcohol, even if it is only 1 tonne to the acre; a perfumed bouquet and an Arabian night of dark berry flavours; the tannins show masterly winemaking at work; only 150 dozen made.

Campbell Mattinson (2007 Vintage) says
The rise in status of this wine over the past ten years has been phenomenal. It is now a contender for the mantle of 'Australia's best red wine'. 2007 RELEASE Frosts devastated the season so there will be precious little of this. The quality though is stunning. Waves of flavour: cherries, stalks, plums, black pepper, wood smoke and cedar. Divine. DRINK 2009-2025.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
Waves of layered, complex flavour.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2005 Vintage) says
Superlative. Pretty, substantial, complex.
