cracka review

Cuttaway Hill has proven that you don’t have to be in a mainstream region to produce amazingly complex, cool climate wines. This is a Pinot from the Southern Highlands that’s laden with a seductive spice that makes it a natural fit for savoury dishes like barbecued duck. It’s redolent of cherries and fresh summer berries with a gentle earthiness, before a ripe fruit palate laden with silky tannins and excellent balance.

We wanted to rate this wine higher, simply because it has so much character. We resisted - just - on the basis that we may be becoming just a little too idiosyncratic. Personality plus. Red fruits (slightly baked), subtle dusty oak, spice and a light earthy, beetroot smell. It's mediumbodied with sour cherry and sweet raspberried flavours, plenty of spice, light, dry tannins and decent length. A touch twiggy and herbal on the finish but a nice sort of wine. A good result for a region working hard on its pinot noir standing.

Light-bodied, savoury /spicy aromas and flavours, but with clear varietal character; does shorten on the finish.

winemaker's notes

A perfumed nose of berry, plum and spicy oak compliments this firm fruit structured pinot noir that has great length and cellaring potential and a rewarding partner to those game dishes enjoyed at a fireside table.
