2015 De Bortoli Sacred Hill Unwooded Colombard Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

It's pure fruit all the way with this cheeky white blend with none of that pesky oak interfering with things. Aromas of melons, citrus and stone fruits decorate the nose, whilst the palate is light-bodied and a touch sweet, with tropical and green apple flavours, friendly acidity, and a soft, refreshing finish. It's great value and will please a crowd.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Very pale straw

Bouquet: Passionfruit and lime

Palate: Ripe tropical flavours and a defining green apple backbone

Suggested cuisine: Ocean trout, seafood and salads

General characteristics: Medium dry / light bodied

Vintage conditions: Fresh early January rains prepared vines for what was to be a mild Riverina vintage anyway. The cooler temperatures allowed for great depth in fruit aromas especially in the Colombard and it also allowed for good natural acid in the Chardonnay

Winemaking: Selected parcels of fruit were harvested in excellent condition. The Colombard being well squeezed to release the flavours in the skins and the Chardonnay gently pressed to retain varietal character and freshness. The Colombard was fermented cool and slowly to retain the varietal expression of the grape. The subsequent wine is left on primary yeast lees to build weight and a creaminess on the palate

2015 De Bortoli Sacred Hill Unwooded Colombard Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
One of the early blends of colombard, used by Wolf Blass and others, using the acid retention ability of colombard to full advantage; a wine that does not rely on sugar to provide its flavour.

The colombard component adds a shaft of lemony acidity that gives it interest it might not otherwise have. Drink now.

Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says
Learning from the wizardry of four De B chardonnays above it, Windy is an elegant, mineral-driven style with purity of white peach, lemon zest and even a touch of lees complexity.

Peter Forrestal (2008 Vintage) says
I marvel at the quality of the wines De Bortoli coax out of Riverina fruit. Unfashionable colombard and temporarily unpopular chardonnay make a terrific quaffing blend. In this 2008 wine, it's reasonably intense, fruity, tightly held together, neatly balanced and with good length. Pleasandy appealing.

Clean, bright and ripe fruit, soft and round in the mouth; ideal commercial style.

Uncomplicated yet lively and fresh with good viscosity and vibrance and a clean, refreshing finish.

This is the kind of wine that makes me believe that De Bortoli are on fire! How even the Riverina can produce whites of this quality at this price defies belief. It has grassy, herby characters and some fresh lychees and passionfruit tropical flavours, is bright, clean and refreshingly lively. A bargain.

Fresh, clean citrus and apple aromas; clean and fresh palate; a touch of stone fruit; good balance reflecting the synergistic blend. Screwcap.

Medium yellow-green; a clean, solid bouquet with faint peachy fruit, the generously flavoured palate benefitting from the crisp acidity provided by the colombard.
