2015 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Sonnenuhr means 'sundial' in German, and kabinett means this is at the drier end of the spectrum style-wise. Once again, it is applely and limey with that telltale 'wet stone' character on the nose, whilst the palate is crisp and crunchy, low in alcohol (8.0%), with zippy citrusy flavours, a flinty texture, and a long, steely finish with barely any sweetness. Awesome with oysters Kilpatrick.

Winemaker's Notes

Dr. Loosen Estate: The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realised that he had vines in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards. To maximise the potential of those vines, he dramatically crop size, uses only organic fertilisation, insists on very strict fruit selection, and employs gentle cellar practices with a minimum of handling.

The Mosel Region: Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, south-facing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett: The famous “sundial” vineyard, in the village of Wehlen, produces the quintessential Mosel Riesling: delicate and refined, with a racy texture and endless charm. The early picked Kabinett is the lightest and most delicate style of German Riesling. Nothing can compare with its elegance and subtlety, as this wine proves with its fine fruitiness and exquisite balance.

The 2015 Vintage: Under close to perfect conditions, we were able to harvest grapes with optimal mist weights and acidity levels, producing wines in all quality levels. The vintage also gave us excellent yields, with a beautiful balance of ripeness and acidity. The wines are dense and concentrated, but with the delicate and graceful style of the Mosel.

Vinification: Cool fermentation in a combination of stainless steel tanks and traditional Fuder barrels; half fermented with natural yeasts, half with cultured yeasts; fermentation stopped by chilling.

Grape Variety: 100% Riesling

2015 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate (2015 Vintage) says
The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is clear and flinty on the nose and delivers the typical ripe, lush and sensual fruit aromas of this famous Grand Cru. Piquant and racy, but also lush and juicy on the palate, this is a pure, fine and elegant but pretty sweet Kabinett.

Nick Stock (2008 Vintage) says
This moves into classic Mosel stone fruits, with ripe peach aromas and flavours and just a hint of lemon/lime citrus. There's an impressive sense of purity and balance with lingering attractive flavours; this punches well above the kabinett station in terms of resonance and intensity.
