2015 Elefante La Mancha Tempranillo Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

What a delicious cheeky Spanish red this is - sourced from La Mancha it couples Shiraz with Tempranillo to make for a medium-bodied, savoury yet still quite juicy sort of red that is purposely built for chorizo consumption. It's hardly a complex red, nor is it very deep but it does pack plenty of Spanish pleasure in.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep red in colour with a ripe, expressive nose of berries, blood plums and smoked spice. The palate is rich and opulently fruited packed with dark berried Shiraz fruit matched by structured, savoury Tempranillo and framed by silky tannins. Impressively complex and well balanced, this wine will gain character and complexity in the cellar for up to five years.

Varietal: 70% Tempranillo 30% Shiraz

Alc/vol: 14.0%

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
Elefante Tempranillo Shiraz routinely offers excellent value. That said, this 2015 release is one out of the box. They’ve nailed this release. It’s jubey and berried and has a good bit of chew to the finish. It’s a generous style with a good sense of shape. There’s a nod to savouriness but no more than that: it’s all berried goodness, and beautifully well crafted at that.

Raymond Chan (2013 Vintage) says
Deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on rim. The nose is tight and elegant, quite slender in proportion, with a heart of black berried fruit along with raspberries, plums, herbs and spices. Violet and dark red floral fragrances emerge with aeration. Medium-full bodied and elegantly presented, the fruit is tightly bound, showing aromatic dark raspberries and black berry fruit. The flavours are sweet and have depth and intensity, and are enlivened by fresh acidity. The wine follows a fine-grained tannin line, the textures carrying through to a dry fish with lifted florals and raspberry fruit nuances. This is an elegant, tightly bound Tempranillo/Shiraz blend with lively, raspberry flavours and a fine, dry grip. Match with lamb, beef and Mediterranean fare over the next 4-5 years. 70% Tempranillo and 30% Syrah from 20 y.o. vines, 90% from Castilla La Mancha and 10% Termpranillo from San Vincente, Rioja, fermented to 14.0% alc., the Rioja portion aged in oak.

It’s relatively light in colour but it has some impact, this Spanish tempranillo-shiraz blend. Tempranillo makes up about 70% of the blend I believe. There’s a gently meaty, smoky aspect to this but it’s mostly about cherry-plum fruit. That said, rusty red-earth notes build through the finish, adding savouriness to the fleshy/fruity show. This is excellent, particularly at the price but in its own right. It finishes very dry; accordingly, it begs to be served alongside food.
