2015 Frei Brothers Reserve Russian River Valley Chardonnay
How much will it set me back?
What do we think?
The Russian River Valley produces some of California's finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with the notoriously foggy afternoons and chilly breeze helping to deliver wines that are spine-tinglingly fresh and vital.
You wouldn't guess on first glance that this Chardonnay comes from a cold spot though - it's a powerhouse wine. A white big on peachy, nougat flavours and with the sort of weight you just don't see anymore.
Robert Parker explains it even better:
'Scented of lemon curd, nectarines and golden delicious apples with a buttered toast and nutmeg undercurrent, the 2015 Chardonnay Reserve offers a great intensity of toast and cream laced stone fruit flavors, with a silky texture and lovely freshness, finishing long.'
A seriously impressive Chardonnay, we're doubly excited as it's the first time ever that the Frei Brothers wines have been seen in Australia.
Now part of the Gallo family's portfolio, the Frei Brothers estate dates all the way back to the 1890s. But we haven't we seen these wines in Australia before purely because they're so keenly sought after in the states - they're like the American Coldstream Hills, just without James Halliday living on the premises!
What's the winemaker have to say?
Region: Our Russian River Valley chardonnay is a soft and complex reflection of one of Sonoma's most renowned cool-climate regions.
Winemaking: The grapes for this Chardonnay are whole-cluster pressed to bring out a fresh fruit characteristic. Secondary malolactic fermentation imparted a plush texture and deep, layered flavors.
On the palate: This wine displays flavors of green apple, orange zest and apple pie, complemented by notes of butter and toast. The rich, nutty flavors in this Chardonnay lead to a silky finish and a plush mouthfeel.
