Cracka Review

If you are expecting a pungent passionfruity wine, think again! This is so left-field it will blow your mind, but one taste will have you hooked. It's a delicate, slightly funky number that shows gooseberries, lime citrus, pears and honeydew melons on the nose, with an intriguing whiff of smokiness. The palate is lighter-bodied and multi-layered, with those gooseberries, citrus and melons punching through, along with hints of grassiness and gentle spice, frisky acidity, and a long, dry, juicy finish. Top notch stuff!

Winemaker's Notes

A vibrant mix of nectarines, yellow peaches and cassis combines with the bright fragrance of lemon zest laced with musky, jasmine-like floral nuances. The palate is packed with ripe stone fruit, melons and mandarin creating a succulent tropical-fruited style with that classic Marlborough zing.

Alc/vol: 13.5%

2015 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
Sweet and sour. Tart and grassy too. This takes you on a ride. It doesn’t feel 100% cohesive but it feels as though it’s going to get there; it just better hurry. Excellent intensity and length. Smoky, grassy aftertaste. Tastes and feels classier than your average Marlborough sauvignon blanc.
2016 - 2018
Tyson Stelzer (2011 Vintage) says
What will the Marlborough of the future look like? You’re looking at it. Kevin Judd was ahead of his time at Cloudy Bay in putting New Zealand on the wine map. Now in Greywacke he’s again setting the pace for the Marlborough of the future. This is a sauvignon of great intrigue, focus, craftsmanship and restraint (and how often do we hear those words of Marlborough?). Pear, apple, guava and passionfruit show honed linearity, while still fleshy and persistent.
Wine Taste - Edition 59
Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
Ah, yes, this is every bit the wine you'd expect from Mr K. Judd, former Cloudy Bay winemaker and a man with a keen eye for all things Marlborough and vinous. The nose has impressive complex, flinty elements; cleverly derived fermentation elements combine with exotic ripe gooseberry and lime fruits. Superb texture and depth on the palate - long and unrelenting finish.
The Good Wine Guide 2012
Louise Radman (2009 Vintage) says
The first release from iconic former Cloudy Bay winemaker, Kevin Judd, the new venture lives up to great expectations. Expressive lemongrass & gooseberry aromatics, pure passionfruit & vivid lemon juice at the core with undertones of basil, citrus leaf & juniper berry. Highly concentrated and fruitful in the mouth with great length, balance & acid drive. The best NZ savvy you are likely to encounter this year. Greywacke - the hard sandstone bedrock of New Zealand
Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
Kevin Judd put NZ on the wine map with Cloudy Bay 25 years ago, and blow me down if he isn’t doing it again with Greywacke (‘Greywacky’). The most exciting Kiwi sauv this year, desperately honed, rippling with minerality, belying its age, its oak & – dare I say – the exuberance of its region.
