This offering from Harewood has a bit of 'old school' charm about its rich, round style. Aromas of ripe stone fruits, lemon citrus and toasty oak rise from the glass, whilst the palate is bright, lush and sumptuous, with more stone fruit and citrus flavours, a rich, slightly buttery texture, and a crisp, toasty finish. It will stand up to rich poultry dishes.

Machine-harvested, crushed and destemmed, mainly cultured yeast with some wild fermentation, matured in French barriques and puncheons (40% new) for 10 months. A tightly furled chardonnay that does, however, have complexity, line, length and balance; grapefruit/citrus elements are in the box seat, oak building mouthfeel and broadening the flavour profile.

winemaker's notes

Winemaking: This estate grown Chardonnay is handpicked and whole bunch pressed resulting in the most pristine, high quality juice. The juice is barrel fermented in a mixture of new and second use water-bent French oak barriques. We use several yeast strains, including wild yeast, to add to the layers of complexity. A small proportion of the barrels are lees stirred weekly, and allowed to undergo the secondary malolactic fermentation, introducing a savoury and textural intensity to the finished wine. The wine spends between 11 months in barrel before minimal fining and bottling.

Tasting Note: A brilliant, fresh, green straw colour. A complex, perfumed nose of citrus and fresh nectarines balanced by toasty french oak and a savoury cashew barrel ferment character. The use of free-run juice has produced an impressively elegant cool climate Chardonnay, achieving a perfect balance between delicate fruit flavours, texture and length. Initial flavours of grapefruit and stone fruit lead to a richer and more textured mid palate that finishes with lingering citrus acidity balanced by spicy French oak.

Cellaring: Drinking well on release, the Harewood Estate Reserve Chardonnay will reward those allowing a 1-2 year rest in the bottles, giving the wine time to show its full character. The wine can be cellared mid term in good conditions.
