Cracka Review

The Hay Shed Hill operation has pumped out a rather delicious, rather classic Margaret River red blend in a style that shows power and grace. An aristocratic wine even, which is bloody marvellous considering the price-point. Yes! Yes!

Winemaker's Notes

The Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines. Old Vines Modern Wines. The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Merlot 20%.

Vintage: It has been a carefree run for winemakers in Margaret River over the last eight seasons with perfect season following one after another, and then 2015 came along and took us out of our comfort zone.
In the late part of 2014, in October particularly, we experienced some of the wildest windiest weather for decades, resulting in one of the worst flowerings on record with windy and wet conditions seriously compromising fruit set with the result that the yields of 2015 were the lowest that I have experienced in 23 years of growing grapes in the south west. Ouch.
The season itself was quite warm in the early part, and very dry. We had a break between white and red varieties as the summer stuttered with some cooler weather giving an extended ripening period for red varieties resulting in well coloured and beautifully ripe grapes. The 2015 red wines are wonderfully well balanced medium bodied, even elegantly structured that may prove to be some of the wines of the decade. Albeit in worryingly small quantities.

Winemaking: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes from the Hay Shed Hill vineyard were harvested and de-stemmed into open topped vessels for fermentation on skins with traditional pump-over cap management to aid colour and flavour extraction. The wine was matured in French oak barrels for 13 months allowing integration of fine oak and development of the soft ripe tannin.

Colour: Deep crimson red of good intensity and vibrant hue.

Nose: Intense berry fruits, cassis and chocolate mint characters notes with background cedar like oak.

Palate: Medium bodied, this wines shows a vibrant and lively fruit driven palate with a fleshy middle and soft mature ripe tannin.

Alc/vol: 14.0%

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2015 Vintage) says
Estate-grown, matured in French barriques for 12 months. The good vintage has underwritten the cassis, bay leaf and black olive background to the cassis fruit of this medium-bodied blend. Will relish a couple of years in bottle.
