Cracka Review

Howard Park have access to some seriously old vines in WA's Great Southern, and here they've tapped into these old beauties for the greater good of all us drinkers. This Rizza is delicious gear too - a cascade of lime and grapefruit, piercing acidity and just a little dip of juiciness. Yes yes wine, for drinking now or forget for a decade.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2015 season: In summary, the 2015 vintage is a mix bag from both the Great Southern and Margaret River. Early varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and some Shiraz have produced excellent wine while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are good yet variable.

The sites: The Mount Barker Riesling is an annual blend of the finest cut of free juice from select vineyard blocks growing in the Mt. Barker sub region of the Great Southern. The cool sites on our Mt Barrow vineyard dominate the blend. This vineyard is planted on a south facing ridge-top with an elevation of between 285 to 370m.

Winemaking: Each vineyard block is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. After settling bright, the free run juice is racked before a long and cold fermentation to preserve regional character and delicate fruit flavours. Blending occurs in June of the vintage year, with the objective of showcasing the typicity of each site in the final wine.

Tasting notes: Brilliant, pale yellow lime in colour with scents of delicate citrus blossom, sweet, earthy pollen and fresh lemon myrtle. The palate has bright citrus, nashi pear and green apple skin flavours giving zest, richness and complexity. A chalk like mineral thread and fine acidity drive the palate. This wine has great presence, ripeness and length of flavour.

Cellaring: In its youth, the Mount Barker Riesling is bright in style, full of abundant fresh fruit, a mineral texture and tight acidity. In time the wine will develop a nut praline and poached citrus and apple richness whilst retaining its linear acidity and stone-like minerality. Howard Park Rieslings will cellar for more than 10 years.

2015 Howard Park Mount Barker Riesling

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2015 Vintage) says
A line of great rieslings have appeared over the decades under the Howard Park label; here a flowery, scented bouquet leads into a complex palate with Granny Smith, Meyer lemon and a subtext of limey acidity produce yet another classy riesling, with more yet to come.
Drink by 2025
Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
Mount Barker riesling to drink now. Or later. Depending on your preference. Elegant riesling. Perfumed. Red apples, blossomy lemons, bath salts and lime. It’s open for business now and drinks well young; it has the acidity and length to keep on going for years; you get to choose. Personally I reckon I’d drink it young.
2016 - 2024
James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
The potent bouquet borders on spicy, with flowers behind; the palate has excellent structure and depth, the flavours centred on a rich vein of citrus, bolstered by firm acidity
