While everyone still seems to be drinking Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Australia actually have a much more delicious version on our doorstep - the classic Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend.
The great joy of this wine style is the balance of the blend with Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc complementing each other like a glass of wine and a Friday night.
The Karri Grove Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon shows all that is good about this blend too. On the one hand you've got citrussy Semillon and then snappy Sauvignon Blanc to add crispness and those classic herbal/tropical aromas. Love and marriage, going together like a horse and carriage!
Karridale, in the far south of the Margaret River wine region, has a cool climate ideally suited to Sauvignon Blanc. It marries beautifully with Semillon to give the classic Margaret River white blend.
2015 was a good vintage; a long, mild, dry growing season with warm weather at vintage yielded moderate harvests of grapes in outstanding condition, with optimum flavour development. The fruit was fermented dry, filtered, cold stabilised, and bottled with no oak influence and no residual sugar.
Intense passionfruit jumps out of the glass. Full tropical fruit on the front and middle palate, crisp, long finish. Lovely as an aperitif, or accompanying a wide range of foods. The judges who awarded this wine a Gold medal said it stood out in a big field for its intense flavours and the complexity of its middle palate, where the 30% Semillon adds a dimension and blends perfectly with the 70% Sauvignon.
Appearance: Pale, almost colourless.
Taste: The tropical fruit jumps out of the glass, and persists throughout the wine. The middle palate is powerful yet delicate, the aftertaste long, dry, crisp and delicate.
Food: Seafood, Thai or other Asian dishes, or just sit and sip it as an aperitif.
