Cracka Review

What's not to love about Riesling? It's the perfect Summer food wine that is generally a tad lower in alcohol, and full of lip-smacking citrusy flavours - which is what this offering from Kerrigan + Berry is. It's only 11.5% alcohol, and displays attractive, seductive aromas of yellow and green citrus, Granny Smith apples, and a touch of guava on the nose. The palate is light, bright, fresh and down-right frisky! With juicy citrusy flavours, taut acidity, and a long, sauntering finish. It will cellar for a few years and soften, but why not chill it down tonight and have with a Thai chicken salad.

Winemaker's Notes

This Riesling is made from the historic Langton vineyard in Mt Barker in WA's Great Southern.

TASTING NOTES: The 2015 KERRIGAN + BERRY is a pale straw colour with lively, steely green tinges. The nose is a perfumed blend of limes, lemons and more tropical passionfruit.

The initial impression on the palate is that of seamless structure, fine vibrant acids and lingering citrus flavours. The use of free-run juice only has given the wine "fineness", balancing the fragile varietal flavours of Riesling.

There is a complex array of flavours in the mouth, dominated by lemons, limes and grapefruit. These are supported by hints of spice and mineral on the mid-palate and green apple on the impressively long finish.

CELLARING: The refreshing lemons and limes make this wine very appealing in its first year or so. However it may take up to ten years before this fine steely structure transforms into the toasty, rich, complex wine that is an aged Riesling.

TECHNICAL: Alcohol 11.5% - TA 8.65g/L -pH 2.81 - Residual Sugar 0.38g/L

Expert Reviews

Wine Companion (2015 Vintage) says
Lemon and lime notes spider their way through to a biting, dramatic finish. Frisson meets pure white wine. Talc and mineral characters add to the landscape. Scintillating.
Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Very light yellow hue, with a faintly yeasty young wine aroma, with some lemon pudding nuances. The palate is light and a touch lean, with good focus and delicacy, if not weight or power. The acidity is slightly prominent on the finish and aftertaste. A very promising young riesling, which goes much better with food

Mount Barker + Frankland River. Great Southern Riesling can often be a bit too austere for my tastes. Has a distinct baby powder perfume over mixed citrus and a little spice. It’s intense, dry and crunchy, with a light talc-like texture, and a fair squirt of tangy citrus on a long controlled finish. Crunch and zoom. You have to like them tight an racy now, or wait a couple of years for it to soften.
