2015 Kooyong Clonale Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

A very citrusy style of wine with lemons and grapefruits on the nose, with just a kiss of smokiness. Great with seafood!

Winemaker's Notes

The 2015 Clonale offers a highly aromatic nose displaying notes of lime zest and nectarine along with a subtle struck-match savouriness. An energetic palate with vibrant grapefruit and mandarin flavours races towards a long, pithy finish.

2015 Kooyong Clonale Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

The Wine Front (2015 Vintage) says
Lime, some yeasty funk, subtle stuck match and cedar spice. Light to medium bodied, chalky and tight, ripe citrus flavours and maybe a little nougat gloss, and savoury and milky with it too. Finish is long and satisfying. Love drinking this. I’m immediately taken with it, and don’t have to think too hard about the score. Super!

Mike Bennie (2016 Vintage) says
On target for a comfortable mesh of Chardonnay fruit flavour and a racier acid line running through the wine. Sits well in glass with its green apple, nectarine, sandalwood and faint fern-herbal character. The palate is edgy in its texture, like a starched sheet, long though, and offers layers of fruit and gentle savouriness. Very pleasant stuff here.

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Mid gold, vivid green hue; the highly expressive and savoury bouquet offers fresh grapefruit, nectarine, charcuterie and struck match in equal measure; the palate is racy and fresh, with the concentration of fruit offering generosity and providing the framework for the diligent winemaking on display; long and harmonious, and good value.

It seems preposterous that of Kooyong's four chardonnays, its entree cuvée should lead off as confidently as this, but there you have it. The fragrant allure of impeccable fruit meets the struck flint character of reductive winemaking.

Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
Stylish and fruit-driven, with a peachy, faintly soapy bouquet of melon, clove and ginger backed by nutty, lightly spicy oak. Medium to full-bodied, it's generous, juicy presence of peach and melon flavour delivers length and freshness, finishing with tangy notes of lemon sherbet and brightly lit acids.

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
The very embodiment of restraint and complexity, with tightly wound citrus fruit, charcuterie and quartz minerality in spades; the palate is racy and pure, linear, focused and long; ready to go and with a great deal of flexibility possible for food and wine matching.

Another handy edition of this wine. The fruit is in vibrant, fresh and scintillating form with a lemon citrus thread through some gentle savoury notes, with citrus and white peach fruits. The palate s brightly lit with crisp acidity and delivers a wealth of tangy citrus flavour backed by chalky, sturdy grip through the finish.

Lightly oaked, savoury and mineral, with spicy, estery aromas of sherbet, grapefruit and white peach backed by a hint of dusty oak and white flowers. Long and citrusy with waxy undertones, it finishes with a hint of bath powder and tightly focused, crunchy acidity.

The great vintages expose the poor winemakers but it takes a tough season to define the most skilful. Sandro Mosele needs to prove nothing, but his masterful talent is certainly on parade in a delicately focused Clonale of pristine grapefruit blossom and white peach purity, underlined by fresh almond nuances. The complexity of lees contact is perfectly controlled for the subtlety and grace of its honed fruit profile, which meshes seamlessly with finely poised texture, lingering grapefruit zest and refreshing, cool vintage acidity.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Elegant, savoury and restrained, with a fresh, citrusy bouquet of melon, pineapple and tropical fruits backed by spicy, vanilla noted of faintly toasty oak and smoked bacon. It's moderately intense, with a bright, juicy core of fruit and restrained oak supported by a fine chalkiness, becoming quite waxy and savoury towards the finish. Finely balanced and likely to flesh out.

2010 Clonale is not a clone of anything that has come before it, ricocheting with complexity, exoticity and defined grapefruit, fig and persimmon, pulling obediently into a clean-crafted finish.

This junior-label Kooyong chardonnay has impressive complexity on the nose, with fine mineral-flecked citrus fruits, white nectarine and a sense of genuine precision. The palate delivers the same edgy white stone-fruit and mineral flavours - very fine, composed and balanced chardonnay here.

The cafe- and bistro-level chardonnay from Kooyong is a pretty stylish wine for the money, offering all the little signatures of Mornington Peninsula's cool fruit characters, some peach and melon, with gentle winemaking overlay. The palate is nicely honed and balanced with a restrained texture and a wash of oak spice through the finish.

Rather sweet and candied, this juicy young chardonnay marries its upfront, ripe and forward flavours of melon and citrus fruit with restrained oak, finishing with creamy, nutty undertones and a mealy presence.

Kooyong's entry-level offering plays attractive grapefruit character and bright fruit lift against savoury, yeasty/bread dough complexity, some fresh herbs too. The palate has a sizzling entry, very fine and intense, brisk acidity, stone fruit flavour and gentle yeasty influence. Great value.

This book would simply not be complete without a swag of Kooyong wines—maker Sandro Mosele is one of the country's finest. He's extremely interested in what specific sites can offer, so he takes fruit from the property's individual vineyards as well as making the estate wine above. Clonale is the entry-level chardy (the equivalent pinot is called Massale). We are going with all three levels for serious value and great drinking.
