Cracka Review

Leeuwin Estate needs no introduction. They are world-famous for their Art Series Chardonnay, and this expressive Shiraz offering is an awesome and affordable red. Smells of dark berries, pepper spice, purple florals and a hint of smokiness lift from the glass, then the medium-bodied palate chimes in with sweet and spicy dark fruit flavours, suede-like tannins, and a good hit of earthy and pepper spices on the long finish. Excellent with a lamb ragu.

Winemaker's Notes

The Siblings label celebrates the family lineage of Leeuwin, with three generations of the founding family now leaving their footprints on the estate.

Variety: 95% Shiraz, 5% Malbec.

Tasting Note: Lifted, bright and briary, the palate expresses dark black cherries, blueberries and mulberries. Chocolate, caramel, camphor and anise surround the fruit spectrum with elevated floral notes of rose petals, violets and subtle dusty oak. Plushly textured, the palate has concentration with mulberries, redcurrants and blue fruits. Black cardamom, anise, clove and cigar box notes sit in balance providing complexity. It is integrated and finely woven with subtle sweet oak, mocha edges and chalky structural tannins.

The Year: While rainfall for spring was significantly lower than average, dams filled and overflowed. November was cooler than average, with showers and unrelenting cool southerly breezes. Early summer was cooler than average with little rain. Harvest commenced early February. Nights were slightly warmer than average, but there were no extremely hot days and the sea breeze was obvious every afternoon. Riesling harvest began in the second week of February; Chardonnay later the same week, Sauvignon Blanc harvest was late February through into March. Autumn arrived on the first of March and day time temperatures were lower than average, with showers and mostly sunny mild conditions prevailing into April. Cabernet and Shiraz bunches hung out in the mild weather, enabling the development of exquisite deep fruit flavours and full physiological ripeness. The flowering Marri tree that vineyards rely on to distract the birds failed to flower well this season. Consequently, there was significant pressure on un-netted vineyards across the region.

Vinification: All the fruit was fermented in open fermenters with 15% being whole bunches to extend the fermentation time. Open fermenters were plunged and pumped over daily and the wine run to new, one and two year old barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine underwent malolactic in barrels and after six months the various components were blended and aged in barrels for a further twelve months. After assemblage, the wine was fined and readied for bottling.

Cellaring Potential: 8-12 years.

Alc/vol: 13.5%

James Suckling (2015 Vintage) says
A juicy and fruity Shiraz with blackberry, black pepper, and hints of citrus. Full to medium body, light tannins and a fruity finish. A lively finish. Edgy.
