Cracka Review

The Mitchell name has come to define the quality of Clare Valley Riesling, their wines often critically acclaimed. Forget what you think you know about Riesling because this is the real deal and just about as pure an expression of the variety you could hope to taste. From 30-year-old vineyards this wine shows vital citrus aromas leading to a bone dry finish with crisp and well-defined acids. Drinks well in its youth but if you have the patience put some away and watch it develop into a rich, toasty wine.

Winemaker's Notes

Made in the very traditional, low intervention style that we have used for the last 30 years. The grapes are hand harvested and treated very carefully in the winery with only the highest quality free-run juice used. The wine experiences a long gentle fermentation with our indigenous vineyard yeasts and is aged on lees until bottling in the first week of September.

Powerful, concentrated aromatic intensity showing lemon, lime and spring flowers on the nose.

The palate has immense generosity of fruit flavour and incredible mineral complexity and length.

2015 Mitchell Watervale Riesling

Expert Reviews

Mike Bennie (2015 Vintage) says
If I dig deep enough in my cellar I know there is a couple of stray bottles of this wine from 97-2005; maybe not every vintage, but I certainly went through a phase. I dip in and out of the wine for a refreshing drink too, but seem to have not reviewed a wine in some time anywhere. Weird. Mitchell are true blue Clare Valley riesling producers, one could say. I like their honest style. Lemon essence, blackberry on briar, touch of tropical fruit, but essentially about citrus and herbal notes here in vibrant perfume. Cool and refreshing to taste with laser-like acidity and dart-shaped feel in palate. Very tangy to finish with acidity set to sherbetty. Refreshing style indeed.
The Wine Front
James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
Bred in the purple; the estate vineyards are 40yo, and the Mitchells have been on the case every year since then. They know how this wine will develop given a minimum of 5 years in bottle. It has the requisite length and balance, citrus and acid the engines to keep it accelerating for years.
Australian Wine Companion
Nick Stock (2012 Vintage) says
A richer and more forward wine that has candied lime and stone fruits on the nose, some richness. A fuller palate, round through the middle and a very approachable wine too.
Good Wine Guide
James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Light straw-green; the fragrant bouquet tells of the citrus and green apple flavours to come on the long, focused palate, lengthened and balanced by very good minerally acidity.

Australian Wine Companion 2014 Edition
James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Vibrant green hue; a perfumed and almost exotic bouquet of fresh lime, coriander and spice; the palate is linear and generous on entry, with grip entering the equation on the dry finish; long and fragrant.

Australian Wine Companion 2013
Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
A classic. Simply a beautiful wine of exemplary structure, elegance and charm. Its pure, crystalline and lustrous bouquet of lavender, lime juice, apple and pear is backed by a hint of talcum powder. Long and finely crafted, its shapely palate reveals a rare purity and focus of lime juice and lemon rind riesling flavour backed by nuances of apple and minerals. It's clear and brittle, finishing with crispness and a tangy hint of brine.
The Australian Wine Annual 2013
Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Generous, round and flavoursome, this long, luscious riesling sports a fresh, floral, faintly mineral and chalky aroma of white flowers, lavender, fresh lime and pear with a hint of white peach. Juicy and concentrated, its palate becomes quite stylish and focused towards its powdery finish of sherbet-like acidity.
The Australian Wine Annual 2012
Rob Geddes MW (2010 Vintage) says
A benchmark regional producer with the hallmark intense Watervale floral aromatics verging to tropical and the regional richness here in a dry and crisp wine.
Rob Geddes MW
Rob Geddes MW (2009 Vintage) says
Intense floral aromatics, dry and crisp with the region’s hallmark undertone of dark spice to the usual floral richness.
Australian Wine Vintages 2010
Rob Geddes MW (2006 Vintage) says
Intense floral aromatics, dry and crisp with the region’s hallmark undertone of dark spice to the usual floral richness.
