2015 Mr. Riggs Piebald Syrah

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

There's plenty of fleshy black plums, black pepper and earthy savouriness on the nose, with just a hint of apricot. The palate is quite full-bodied, with plush, sweet-fruit flavours, fine savoury tannins, and a dry, rich, warming finish. Lamb or Peking duck would be great with this.

Winemaker's Notes

After years of honing the style using a combination of Adelaide Hills and our cool climate McLaren Vale vineyard in Clarendon, 2015 is our first 100% Adelaide Hills Syrah style wine.

Deep violet framed with the intense reds of the edge of a sunset. A hazy fume of all the darker fruits of the forest combined with the fresh turned earth from which they have grown; lusty, intense and fine. Violets protrude to the point of pollen and return visits to the glass discover anise and dried spice. All the flirting of fragrance is followed and multiplied on the palate. Resounding, total, and intense this wine shrouds both the palate and the moment.

Campbell Mattinson (2014 Vintage) says
The liquorice, the black cherry, the sweet/roasted plums. This serves it up and makes sure you’re happy, eager as you like. Violet lift and smoky, creamy oak both keep the charm offensive going. Tannin is so fine, so fine it nearly blows your mind. Don’t expect complexity but do expect seduction.

Elegant, supple and spicy, with a heady, deeply perfuemd bouquet of blackcurrants, raspberries, plums and cedar/vanilla oak backed by musky, faintly meaty nuances. It's smooth, gentle core of bright bluberry.cassis fruit and restrained cedary oak is supported by fine, pliant backbone, finishing quite savoury with a lingering note of licorice.

As much red as crimson in colour; a very vibrant and lively wine, with much flavour activity in the bouquet and in the mouth, with high-toned spices, hints of earth and leather, and juicy black fruits.

A mix of black (shiraz) and white (viognier) grapes, called piebald. Nice. Big flavour. Full of blackberry jubes, liquorice and Asian spices, a general woodiness and lots of sweet, spicy fragrance. It comes on strong and finishes well, with grainy tannin and mouth-watering length. It's a good wine - and benefits from a quick slosh in the decanter.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
A super-sweet set of aromas on the nose, this is unashamedly declaring its viognier aromatics amid dried apricots and ripe summer berries. The palate has a direct, juicy appeal - plenty of plum and blackberry, with a slice of sweet oak spice and viognier's vexing complexity making itself known here too. Direct appeal for now; it will gather more savoury complexity over the medium term.

Lovely concentration, the shiraz getting a small floral lift from the viognier component; very good texture.
