Single Block. Winery Block. Yarra Valley floor. Vines planted in 1994.
And here we enter the wonderful medium-bodied world of Yarra Valley Cabernet. When it’s done well, as it is here, its company is such a pleasure. This tastes of pencil shavings and tobacco, chocolate and blackcurrant, with mint and mulberry as complexing agents. It’s a wine of calm assurance. It sheets tannin throughout in assertive fashion. The best course of action is to cellar it for 5+ years.2021 - 2028+
Hand-picked, de-stemmed, 4-day cold soak, wild yeast fermentation, 3-week post-fermentation maceration; 15 months in French oak. Sure handling and a high quality vintage has presented a cabernet of very high quality, its cassis fruit caressing every corner of the mouth, tannins in a micro-support role.Drink by 2042
Pretty much textbook Yarra Cabernet here. Blackcurrant, redcurrant, almost strawberry in the mix, perfume, pencils, chocolate and nougat. Medium-bodied, light in touch but with dense fine grained tannin packed well into its lithe frame, juicy strawberried acidity, seamless oak integration and a fresh red fruited finish of excellent length, with a fond farewell from tannin that fans on the finish. Superb.2017 - 2027+
2018Australian Wine Companion 2012
Very pretty, smooth and willowy, this polished, elegant cabernet has a confiture-like bouquet of cassis, mulberries, raspberries, blueberries and dark plums entwined with fresh cedar/vanilla oak, with smoky, sage-like undertones. Underpinned by an ethereal, loose-knit spine of juicy flavour, it's medium in weight, with a sweet, juicy expression of varietal flavour finishing with length and a faint, lingering herbal aspect. The Australian Wine Annual
Definitive Yarra Valley cabernet with medium-bodied restraint yet no lack of concentration of vibrant red berries, capsicum and finely structured tannins. A core of vibrant acidity energises the finish.Wine100
This is a striking wine right from the very first impression. The nose is layered up with fragrant summer berry fruits, cassis and fragrant sweet oak, and it smells both concentrated and complex. The palate delivers all that the nose promises, layers of dense, fine cabernet tannin sit in elegant shape, there's black-cherry and cassis fruit stuffed tight into the middle, and the finish makes a long, smooth and fresh impression. Very nicely crafted, it's approachable now but built for further time in bottle.2014The Good Wine Guide
Good crimson hue; blackcurrant and cedar aromas lead into a medium-bodied, long and refined palate, the flavours subtle yet multidimensional, ranging through black fruits to earth and spices.Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010
Bright colour; vivid cabernet characters on both bouquet and palate; incisively fresh blackcurrant fruit on a notably long and persistent palate built on ripe tannin structure.Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
Firm and astringent, with pleasing intensity, balance and tightness. A floral, violet-like perfume precedes a juicy expression of mulberries, plums and dark cherries, tightly knit with cedar/vanilla oak and its grainy tannin. Genuinely elegant, it finishes with plenty of length and brightness of flavour.Australian Wine Annual 2009 2008
A pristine, dusty and savoury cabernet whose heady, violet-like perfume of blackcurrant, mulberries, dark cherries and plums is backed by slightly gamey and cedary oak. Framed by firm and fine-grained tannins, its measured and elegant palate of vibrant fruit and cedary oak finishes with length and depth.Australian Wine Annual 2007 2006
Full to medium in weight, this dark, closed and brooding cabernet has a deep, cedary aroma of dark berries and chocolate. Its polished layers of dark berries, plums and cedar/chocolate oak are framed by firm, fine-grained tannins, presenting a well-structured palate of elegance and the potential to unfold with time.Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005
Light, simple and confectionary aromas of red berries and fight cedary oak with herbal undertones. Simple, forward and cedary, with some juiciness and sweetness before a greenish, slightly raw finish.Australian Wine Annual 2005 2004
Winemaking Notes: All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to gently de-stemming to fermenter. After a four day cold maceration, fermentation commenced and peaked at 30°C. Pump-over were conducted twice per day, and post ferment, the wine remained on skins for an additional 4 weeks prior to pressing. The wine then spent 15 months in French oak barrels maturing before blending and bottling.
