Cracka Review

A wine for Pinot Purists, this wine is the ultimate expression of site. That site is a small vineyard in the Yarra Valley where winemaker Dave Bicknell waves his magic wand to conjure up the most elemental and earthy expression of Pinot possible. This is heady and perfumed with cherry, plum and earth before delivering a very pure palate of Pinosity. Cherry, forest floor and savoury notes on the layered and long palate. The tannins are beautifully integrated providing a wine of infinite depth and complexity.

2015 Oakridge 864 Pinot Noir

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson (2015 Vintage) says
The Pinot Noir coming out of Oakridge is top notch. There was a time when Oakridge/Dave Bicknell was known as the Chardonnay master but it’s fair to say that the mastery has expanded. This release is smoky and sinewy and savoury, first and foremost, but it still shows sweet fruit and sweet spice; it nails both street cred and seduction. It finishes sound, chalky, appealing, persistent. Gorgeousness in a bottle.

Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Medium to light red/purple colour. Smoky toasty barrels and earthy foresty complexities to sniff, the palate soft and gentle, medium-bodied and superbly textured. A less-fruity young pinot of real style and quality.

James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
MV6 clone, hand-picked and sorted, whole berries open-fermented, wild yeast, matured in French oak for 16 months. A beautiful wine from a great vineyard, purchased by De Bortoli in '15. It instantaneously catches you in a silken web of a multitude of red berry and plum flavours; you know the tannins are there, like children to be seen but not heard, oak likewise. One of the most beautiful Yarra Valley pinots from the vintage.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Bright, clear crimson-purple; the bouquet is wonderfully fragrant and pure, but it is the astounding length and drive of the palate that makes this wine so special; red fruits and fine spicy tannins are spun together like a silk brocade. Winemaking of the highest calibre by David Bicknell brings this special site to life.

These days the best Oakridge wines are invariably white wines, in particular chardonnay And then they go and produce a wine like this. It isn't a show pony, that's for certain. In fact it's quite uncompromising. It's structured, earthen, tastes of rhubarb and dry, black cherry and is bell-bright in its appearance. There's some toasty, creamy oak but the wine is fast soaking it up. It needs time. And then it should be very good.
