Cracka Review

The secret to good Pinot Grigio is all about the contrast of acidity and texture that makes for a wine that is refreshing, super dry and lean yet also with enough weight to make it interesting. This super cool Yarra example fits the profile perfectly - a light and vibrant sort of wine with freshness to burn.

Winemaker's Notes

One of our most popular lunchtime wines. Juicy and mouth-watering; the palate is direct, linear and refreshing.

Our "Over the Shoulder" wines are great examples of wines that typify varietal characteristics of the Yarra Valley. Wines which are fresh, vibrant and medium bodied. Low alcohol wines with intensity, marvellous tightness and sharp focus.

Selection: This Pinot Grigio was sourced from the Spring Lane vineyard in Coldstream using handpicked grapes and crafted using traditional methods.

Vintage: A warm spring and mild summer has resulted in excellent crops and ideal harvesting conditions. The wines have outstanding depth of flavour and structure.

Winemaking: All grapes where whole bunch pressed to tank with full solids and without acidification. A small quantity from each parcel (10%) was transferred to old 500 litre puncheons, with the balances remaining in stainless. All ferments proceeded naturally and remained on their lees for 9 months prior to blending and bottling with a single filtration.

Expert Reviews

Gary Walsh (2015 Vintage) says
What a smooth operator this is. Gentle white flower perfume, almonds and white fleshed fruit. Subtle, but plenty enough flavour, glossy lightly powdery texture, some crunch of green pear on a long finish. Beautifully turned out. Great to drink.

Wine Companion (2015 Vintage) says
Dry, chalky, almost quartz-like in its texture and character. It's ripped with nashi pear, nutty characters and spice, a touch of florals adding a gentle prettiness. Very good.

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
A handy pear- and apple-scented grigio that carries clarity and freshness at every step. The palate delivers decent texture, with crisp pear-skin, lemon and melon flavours. Balanced - really good
The Good Wine Guide 2011
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Spicy, crunchy, grainy acidity underlies the primary pear fruit flavours; the finish is long and crisp, the acidity cleansing, not scarifying.
Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010
James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Pale colour and restrained pear bouquet; a little straw comes through on the palate, with pronounced acidity and fresh citrus fruit to conclude.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Brightened and given character by citrussy acidity surrounding core flavours of pear and apple.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
This shows winemaker David Bicknell's classic burgundian touch over some bruised apple and ripe chalky pear fruits; a light coat of winemaking complexity adds grapefruity/ struck-match character - it works. Smooth and supple on the palate, the flavours sit in crisp cider/pear spectrum, some leesy texture smooths out the finish nicely. Finishes crisp and dry.
