2015 O'Leary Walker Watervale Riesling Clare Valley Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Riesling is a joy to behold. They are the perfect summer wine, and go with a range of foods from freshly-shucked oysters to spicy Thai dishes. This offering out of the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley is a lighter-bodied, dry style that shows abundant limes and lemons on the nose, with hints of green apple and jasmine florals. The palate is light and zippy, with juicy citrus flavours, a touch of slaty minerality, and a crisp, dry, zingy finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Pale straw in colour with a slight green tinge

Nose: Delicate lime and citrus notes. Restrained with hints of lemon and fennel

Palate: Very fine with great length of acid. Purity of fruit with lime and crisp finish

Food: A perfect accompaniment to freshly shucked Coffin Bay oysters and Atlantic Salmon or King George Whiting

Cellaring: Vibrant and flavoursome with zesty acid; this will soften with time. Enjoy now, or benefit from careful cellaring for 10+ years

Alc/vol: 12.0%

2015 O'Leary Walker Watervale Riesling Clare Valley Riesling

Expert Reviews

Mike Bennie (2016 Vintage) says
Very high drinkability here, albeit it feels a bit Technicolour rather than IMAX in Dolby surround sound. Juicier than the Polish Hill, but that’s to be expected. It smells of lime cordial, tonic water, talc, potpourri. It has a kind of Real Lemonade freshness and sweet-citrussy brightness to the palate. It goes long, goes well. It’s a good drink. Bring on summer.

Light to medium yellow hue, with a slightly musty first nose, which also has lemon pith, dried herbs and dried flowers. The palate is delicate and intense, intensely flavoured and structured with driving acidity giving it tang and focus. A piercing wine with a bright future.

Gleaming straw-green, a feature of a number of Clare Valley rieslings from '14. With over 50 years of combined experience, it's not surprising David O'Leary and Nick Walker nailed this wine, with its zesty lemon and lime fruit built on a bedrock of perfectly balanced acidity.

Light straw-green; all the cliches: classic, pure, etc, can be legitimately used for this beautifully balanced mouthful of lime, lemon and citrus zest, underwritten by minerally acidity on its lingering finish - and its long future.

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
2012 is a season that captured both refined definition and fruit ripeness, making for sensational value in this entry Clare riesling. Its bouquet is particularly fragrant, singing with lemon and lime blossom and granny smith apple definition. A gloriously fresh palate is particularly tightly focused, carrying Watervale’s signature chalky mineral texture.

This has finesse, precision and great length, sleek. Not as showy or as profound in the fruit department but very, very well made, tidy and nicely linear.

Watervale has a special place in Australia with its generous style of Riesling showing exuberant musk, tropical punch and floral perfume with a subtle brown spice in the back ground. The initial flavour and texture, mouth filling with almost fresh-cut pineapple and a steely acidity that gives length to the palate richness.

Bright straw-green; the bouquet is classic Watervale, with lime and lemon blossom, the palate following on precisely, its length built on perfectly balanced fruit and acidity, the finish pure and bright. Died in the wool stayer.

O'Leary is the over performing bargain outfit of Clare, and this wine proves it because no one else has conjured a wine of such confidence and well-defined kaffir lime, granny smith and lemon zest at this price.

Watervale has a special place in Australia with its generous style of Riesling showing musk, tropical punch? and floral perfume and exuberant initial flavour and texture mouth filling in youth slipping into fresh-cut pineapple richness. They often dip around five years and lift into mature honeyed flavours and round texture becoming quite morish.

Highly fragrant, with floral apple and citrus blossom nuances, the palate with a great combination of quite delicate fruit underscored by a mineral framework. 3500 dozen made.

Plenty of charming, fragrant and enticing Watervale character here, fully ripened and gently seasoned with bath-powdery fragrance; the palate's lined up along fine, bright acidity and has elemental appeal. Lifts through the finish, pure and balanced.

The Watervale sibling of the Polish Hill is a less dramatic style - pulled back from the knife edge - showing more fragrant, delicate characters. The palate is quite savoury and elegant, with candied lime flavours and a lingering mellow finish. Lovely balance, instantly approachable.

Lime blossom bouquet and palate; very fresh and lively, with a mineratly backbone; lacks the complexity of the Polish Hill.

Similar depth of colour to the Polish Hill, though no hint of browning; a complex mix of tropical fruit, spice and citrussy acidity; has length and drive through the finish

If Jeff Grosset is the king of Clare riesling (and he is), these guys must be the new crown princes. They're making stunning wines and none better than their rieslings (although, like King Jeffrey, they make other brilliant wines too; the Clare/McLaren Vale shiraz is a personal fave). Limes, lemon blossoms, perfect balance, superb wine. But they could ease the throttle on the back-label waffle. 'Historical glories'? Get out of here.

Slate, mineral and citrus run through a tight and focused palate, great acidity investing the wine with exceptional length.

Curiously, more minerally and tight than the Polish Hill River at first blush; crisp, fresh lime and lemon fruit then comes through.

Pale straw-green, with a lively, fragrant, spice and citrus bouquet and a fresh palate with tingling fruit and crunchy acidity; overall delicacy and finesse.

Firm, focused, herb, citrus and slate aromas, then a generous but not flabby palate, with excellent balance, mouthfeel and length. Right in the slot.

Light to medium yellow-green; the bouquet is more powerful than the Polish Hill River, but paradoxically is less aromatic. The palate has great flavour, passionfruit and lime flooding the mouth, balanced by good acidity.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Light green-yellow; the spotlessly correct and crisp bouquet with apple and citrus aromas lays the foundation for a long, lingering and intense palate with a faint touch of CO2 which will stand the wine in good stead in the years ahead. The finish is nigh on perfect, notwithstanding that touch of spritz.
