2015 Philip Shaw No 11 Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The No 11 Chardy has been a good wine for a few years now, and this one continues its success. Cool aromas of grapefruits, white stone fruits and cashews decorate the nose, whilst the palate is peachy and a touch savoury, with licks of toasty oak, racy lemony acidity, and a long, crisp finish. Lovely stuff!

Winemaker's Notes

No.11 displays a light, bright straw colour with a green hue which is a sign of youth. The aroma is very youthful with citrus and white peach characters and some subtle oak. The crisp flavours from the full of vibrant varietal characters, give way to a wine with great mid-palate softness. The integrated oak adds texture to deliver a fineness that is long and clean. Drink to 2018.

2015 Philip Shaw No 11 Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
Has the poise and elegance of the district and wine maker, with quality stone fruit aromas and well judged nutty oak and wine maker use of solids in the back ground giving a distinctive savoury detail with the finesse of fruit and oak. Lovely youthful balance and structure and not as pretty as the architect" of the same vintage

Bright straw-green; Philip Shaw's vast experience with chardonnay from many parts of Australia shines through in this perfectly structured and balanced wine; grapefruit, nectarine, white peach, cashew and oak form a seamless stream across the palate.

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
An elegant, finely crafted chardonnay that augments its deep, pure flavours of melon, peach and cumquat with nutty, smoky oak, a hint of butterscotch courtesy of a partial malolactic fermentation, creamy, yeast-derived notes and faintly reductive suggestions of smoked meats and minerals. Scented with lemon sherbet and paw paw, it's initially luscious and juicy before extending towards a long, dry and austere finish. Finely balanced, it's a true winemaker's wine.

Light green-straw; a very elegant and refined Chardonnay, the focus on citrus and mineral, not on fig, melon or ripe stone fruit; the oak is subtle, and the overall flinty character bows to Chablis. The question is whether the bow is a little obsequious. Time will tell.

Light straw-green; sophisticated wine-making has produced a sophisticated wine, its multitude of aromas, flavours and texture welded together; it is at the opposite end of the universe to the fruit bomb style, lovely now or down the track.

Stylish, elegant and seamless, this classy, deeply layered and textural wine has a smoky, nutty bouquet of grapefruit, lemongrass, nectarine and toasty oak backed by nuances of minerals and lime juice. It's supple and shapely, with a bright, mouthcoating and crystalline fruitfulness wrapped in a soft, gentle acidity.

Texture, minerality and mouthfeel are the priorities here, giving an air of sophistication to this Orange district Chardonnay and at the same time underscoring its peach, melon and butterscotch flavours. A very attractive vintage for No 11.

Elegant, crisp and focused, with a pristine, if slightly candied presence of grapefruit, white peach, nectarine and lemon knit with delicate, lightly spicy clove-like vanilla oak. It's long, supple and pleasingly fluffy, finishing with refreshing zippy, lemony acidity.
