Cracka Review

You’ll have red claws by the time you finish this addictive Pinot Noir as it will stain your hands with grapey goodness. Winemaker Tom Carson has created an enigmatic Pinot with bags of character and appeal. It’s crammed with cherry and berry flavours with hints of scintillating spice and a soft palate weight. It’s long and lingering with dark fruit, subtle oak and a supple mouthfeel. A perfect match for duck.

Winemaker's Notes

Perfumed, fragrant aromas are dominated by cherry and dark berry fruits complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The long, silky palate has a lovely elegance and velvety texture, with concentrated red fruit flavours and a finely poised finish.

Early indications are that the 2015 vintage will be as good as the highly regarded 2010 and 2012 vintages.

You can buy this without hesitation. It’s a little warm perhaps but it’s varietal, fragrant, well turned out and just plain delicious. Sweet-sour cherries, woody spice notes, a tasty, tangy, firm-ish finish. Scratches the pinot noir itch very nicely indeed.

The Red Claw wines are made by exemplary Mornington Peninsula producer Yabby Lake. The class of both the fruit and the winemaking shines through here. Yes this is a good wine. Tangy, textural and with good persistence. Sweet-sour cherries, strawberries and tonic/herb-like notes. Has a silkiness, an urgency. Chalky tannin completes the picture. Excellent buying.

An assertive, spicy and herbal pinot whose very ripe and faintly tomatoey bouquet of red cherries, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveals nuances of dried herbs. It's sumptuous and generous, with a rich, round presence of plums, beetroot, cherries and smoky oak overlying meathy nuances and some greenish notes. A little too under and over-ripened for a higher rating.

Red Claw is one of the second labels of Yabby Lake and Heathcote Estate. Its best feature is its texture - it feels satiny on your tongue - and it's always good when a pinot noir has this as a feature. It's fairly light in flavour though it seems sweeter and fuller given time to breathe so, to get the best from it, give it a slosh in a decanter. It tastes of sour cherries, boysenberry, Turkish delight and rubber. Wouldn't be surprised if this scores better in a year's time.

Yabby Lake's new junior label washes ripe, almost jammy pinot characters together with tobacco and undergrowthy complexity, the oak is assertive. Quite chunky and chewy in the mouth with greener tannin edges, shows some depth and density, needs time to settle.
