Cracka Review

McLaren Vale Shiraz is big on everything and this RockBare is a great example of the region’s signature wine. It’s crimson-purple in colour, with intense blackberry, chocolate and brown spice aromas. Its full-on palate is switched up to 11, with waves of rich berry, currant and chocolate flavours balanced by velvet-smooth tannins. The red’s richness and long, warm finish make it a good after dinner drink.

Winemaker's Notes

RockBare Shiraz is a truly regional blend grown on low cropping vineyards from all quarters of the McLaren Vale. Our winemaking philosophy is encapsulated by the integration of these unique parcels with minimal winemaking intervention followed by 18 months maturation in an established blend of oak, delivering a quintessentially distinctive Shiraz.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Impenetrable colour; the choc-mint bouquet is strongly regional, the palate thickly textured, rich and complex, with oak coming through on the finish.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Purple-red; a quintessential full-bodied McLaren Vale shiraz, with masses of blackberry and black plum fruit wrapped in a coat of dark unsweetened chocolate. A long future.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Prominent oak dominates the bouquet, giving the ample dark fruits a distinct cola edge; the palate too is quite charry, but there is plenty of fruit to push through with a little more time.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Has an earthy/savoury edge to the fruit, along with regional dark chocolate nuances, but is a little deficient in mid-palate vinosity, perhaps the vintage

Campbell Mattinson (2006 Vintage) says
Winemaker Tim Burvill started up this label with the 2002 vintage, following a stint making wine at various posts in (the former) Southcorp wine empire. The shiraz has been consistently good. A quick search online should help you find it at prices around the $16-17 mark. 2006 RELEASE It's a hefty drink for a wine at this price. It's full of warm, dark blackberries-shot-with-licorice flavour, chocolaty oak swimming in among it all. Talk about a mouthful of flavour; this is full on. If you want subtle, do not knock on this wine's door. If you want awesome red wine power, come to mumma ... DRINK 2008-2012.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Medium-bodied, sharing the same finesse and elegance with the other RockBare wines; also has focus and intensity to the blackberry and dark chocolate fruit; fine, persistent tannins; very good length, balance and finish.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Good purple-red; black fruits, leather, spice and dark chocolate aroma and flavour. Excellent structure and length; controlled oak.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Very good colour; potent, focused black fruits; immaculate fruit and oak balance and integration; fine, persistent tannins, long finish.
Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; the bouquet offers a complex amalgam of earthy shiraz and well-handled oak; the palate has abundant sweet cherry flavour, but is neither heavy nor alcoholic; good length. Very good value.
