2015 Sandalford Estate Reserve Verdelho

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

It’s a rare day when you see a reserve Verdelho but believe the hype because there are certain wineries and regions that this grape his handled sensitively. Take Sandalford in the Margaret River for instance, they have the belief to pull off a reserve style Verdelho and achieve it effortlessly. It’s lifted with tropical aromas of guava and lychee but in no way overbearing but it’s the texture that’s key. Not oily but weighted beautifully with expressive fruit flavours that will become more luscious and bountiful with bottle age.

Winemaker's Notes

WINEMAKERS NOTE

The Verdelho grapes were machine harvested in the very early hours of the 13th February, when the grapes were at their coolest. After which, the fruit was immediately processed and underwent a long, slow ferment in stainless steel tanks with a selected yeast strain. Once the fermentation was ceased, immediate stabilisation, clarification and bottling occurred. Pristine fruit in a bottle is more than apt to this style.

TASTING NOTE

COLOUR: Pale lemon
NOSE: Honeydew melon, guava and quince paste with a hint of spice.
PALATE: Honeydew melon up front followed by guava and quince paste flavours. Lemon citrus notes, give the wine a defined line on the palate and a strong finish. This wine is textural and complex, whilst still having a freshness to it. Drinking beautifully now, this wine will be a great cellaring wine (not unlike Hunter Semillons). It’s also an excellent food wine and will match beautifully with broad range of food, think grilled Octopus through to Chorizo. Serve well chilled.

Alc/Vol: 12.5%

Ray Jordan (2012 Vintage) says
Rich ripe and flavoursome verdelho from Margaret River. Tropical fruit with a little orange rind and citrus edge. The palate is long and full with masses of pleasing flavour. Great summer drinking.

Rather dull, state and overworked. An iodide-like bouquet of sea spray and nutty, leesy notes with greenish undertones lacks freshness and brightness. It?s raw and edgy, with a hard, chewy palate that lacks varietal flavour, finishing hot and out of shape.
