The Reward from industry stalwarts, St Hallet, is their more restrained offering if you are looking for something that isn't a body-builder style. Smells of black fruits and leafiness rise from the glass, whilst the palate is medium-bodied and graceful, with tastes of blackcurrants and After Eight mints, talcy but evident tannins, and a decent, juicy finish. Drink over the next decade, or give it some air, and cook up a beef stew.

The Inspiration: With every vintage our winemaking team learn more about the influence of the site on the flavour and quality of the wines. In the best vintages, the low yielding Cabernet Sauvignon vines of the Barossa Valley produce exceptional fruit with velvety richness, supple tannins and a potential for ageing. The Reward Cabernet is only made in these great years.

Bouquet: Seductive varietal aromas of blackberry leaf with lifted bright purple fruits.

Palate: The balanced, even textured palate opens with blackberries before finishing with notes of dark chocolate and mint. Powdery tannins coat the mouth and linger for a long finish.

St HallettÍs 2010 reds are a revelation of an order hitherto unknown, even to this celebrated estate, and itÍs remarkable that the standout to date (stand by for 2010 Old Block next year) is not a shiraz but a cabernet. The story becomes all the more unlikely when itÍs revealed that this wine comes from a western-facing slope of a single vineyard in Rosedale _ the antithesis of the cooler, higher parts of the Barossa more likely to yield refined cabernet. The secret, according to its rockstar maker, Toby Barlow, is early harvesting. The result is a wine with concentration of epic proportions, yet holding its composure with striking harmony, maintaining a lifted violet fragrance from start to finish. ItÍs a monumental statement of beautifully refined and mouth-fillingly firm tannins of high cocoa dark chocolate texture, propelling varietal hallmarks of blackcurrant, cassis, sweet blueberries, tobacco, leaf and capsicum. This is one of the great Barossa cabernets of the modern era, at a fraction of the price of anything else like it.
