Cracka Review

Poor old Merlot gets a gets a bad wrap. It really does. Once the cool kid, it is now way back in the line, sitting behind the swagger of Pinot Noir and the shiny newness of Nero d'Avola or Tempranillo. But you know what? Good Merlot is delicious. Rich, soft, generous - it can be lovely red wine. And this Tahbilk One Million Cuttings Merlot fits that brief perfectly, showing everything good about Merlot. No need for trickery, no fancy names, just loads of plummy fruit, a liberal dash of spice, all backed up by that trademark varietal generosity. This Merlot has everything you want.

Merlot - we still like you, especially when you taste this good!

Winemaker's Notes

Viticulture / Winemaking: This wine was crafted from 100% Merlot grapes, sourced from our vineyards in the Goulburn Valley. Grapes were picked and crushed during the cool of night to retain their fresh, varietal flavours. The juice was then divided into select parcels. Each parcel underwent a different treatment such as malolactic fermentation; fermentation and time with French and American oak; or spending an extended period on yeast lees. Each treatment resulted in an individually flavoured parcel of wine, and the unique character and personality of the final blend is a result of the special handling of these separate parcels.

Harvest notes: The challenges that each harvest brings never cease to amaze. Just when you think you have an understanding of what’s going on, another season hits bringing with it yet another challenge and a completely new scenario. In 2015 there was little rain and warm temperatures, leading to fast ripening, early in the season. Once temperatures cooled, things slowed down and there was an increase in flavour and quality.

Wine description: Aromas of rich blueberry and dark chocolate with a hint of spice. The soft and supple palate has smooth fruit flavours of blackberries and ripe plums, rounded with fine grained tannins.

Food recommendations: Grilled chops - veal, pork or lamb - especially with herbs such as thyme, rosemary and oregano.

Sam Kim (2015 Vintage) says
Beautifully fruited and immediately appealing, the wine shows dark plum, cherry pie, vanilla and hazelnut aromas on the nose, followed by a succulent palate that is silky and flavoursome with excellent fruit intensity. The wine is very approachable and generously expressed with a lengthy smooth finish.
