The Tar and Roses label is quite a unique partnership between two passionate winemakers who had a vision to bring the best of Heathcote and other remote Victorian outposts. With over 30 years experience Don Lewis is the driving force behind this boutique label who makes wine alongside Narelle King, a partnership that has produced the kind of wines that are both imbued with masculinity and femininity. This is so typical of the region showing red berry and anise aromas with a palate that’s broad and savoury with hints of chocolate. Lovely balance and full of fine tannins on the finish.

A fragrant bouquet of fresh blackberry, sage, violets and a lick of charry oak are on display; the medium to full-bodied palate is fleshy, and the zesty acidity reveals red fruit highlights alongside some fairly serious drying tannins; food in the form of protein is a necessity here.

Yes, all the hype is well directed and this is a more than worthy successor to the much-exalted 2007. Liquorice, black plums, cherries and wood spice coalesce in a textural, supple palate that weaves dark fruits and controlled oak together seamlessly.

The 2007 was a stellar wine and this 2008 gets better and better, the longer it rests in the bottle. Great value here. Tonnes of enjoyment to be had here. It tastes of blackberry and sandalwood and earth, and from the instant it hits your mouth to the moment you swallow, it's all about dark-fruit flavour. Yummo. The aftertaste is an amalgam of eucalypt, spice and toasty oak, though the oak is as sophisticated as it is underplayed. A generous wine with widespread appeal.

This shocked us with just how good it was - and at what price. It's made by Don Lewis and his winemaking partner Narelle King. It's absolutely bloody marvellous. It tastes of blackberries, gunsmoke, minerals and eucalypt, and it carries an understated version of meaty complexity. What it really has is lovely flavour, purity and length - outstandingly so for a wine at this price. This is fresh and rich and plainly gorgeous.

winemaker's notes

High praise comes in far and wide for this Heathcote Shiraz. It’s typical of the region showing black cherry and fennel aromas alongside a palate that’s broad and savoury with hints of blood plum, liquorice and roasted beetroot. It’s juicy, well balanced and full of fine tannins. Sensational value too! A great partner for salt crusted eye fillet.

Winemakers comments: As with previous vintages the wines come from two main vineyards, one off the deep red Cambrian soil while the other comes from tougher more gravelly ground. The first gives us a wine that's rich, chocolatey and earthy while the other has more highly fragrant notes with good acid and sweet fruit. The wine that results is our take on Heathcote Shiraz.

Vinification: The grapes for this wine came from a combination of vineyards. They were all kept separate during their fermentation and maturation lives. The machine harvested volumes were crushed and de-stemmed into static fermenters and pumped over three times a day. After approximately ten days of fermentation, during which time the temperature and acid levels were monitored, they were individually pressed to tank using an air bag press. The wine was racked off gross lees and put into barrel to finish malolactic fermentation and mature in a combination of new French and older barriques.

Appearance: Deep burgundy.

Aroma: Fennel and black cherries with hints of slate and wet rock on the nose.

Palate: Prunes, blood plums, liquorice and roasted beetroot on the palate. Supportive tannin, well balanced with a long lingering finish.
